Smile Dog nail trim - pictorial

OK finally got my new trimmer today!! gave the beanies a long-overdue nail trim, felt great to be "in control of the blade" again

So here is Maika losing her daggers and slipper-feet... first trimming the fuzzies:

then the nails get a snip and a shave:

she is such a good girl...

last touch-ups:

and voila! all done and good for about two weeks before we do it all again, LOL!

and then for dakotah... his foot "before":

lots of icky fuzzies!

bye-bye fuzzy foot...

trimming and shaving off bit by bit...

here you can see i slipped and nicked his quick, there is a pin-size drop of blood on one of his nails. that's because he jerked his foot away from me as i was cutting, the little rat!

all done, ain't he a handsome foot for a 3-year old appartment doggy?

is it just the front paws that get cut? Cos with kitties, the back ones are always less sharp

With my doggies, the back ones are actually longer. They don't use them as much. Also the two middle claws are always shorter than the outside ones.

At our house, the back ones stay shorter, but the tips on the nails are sharper and narrower--so those get nipped off. The front ones get longer and seem stronger (harder to trim), with the nails on the middle two toes shorter (usually) than those on the outer toes.

that's about it here, too... and i don't know if you can see from the "before" photos, but as prin mentioned in another thread, dog's nails don't always grow the same: maika's are pointed out towards the front of her feet, and dakotah's curve downwards a bit. he actually is a lazy walker and drags his feet on the hardwood floor (doesn't lift them much) so it was time to trim the nails, and maika is very quiet even if her nails are actually longer. weird!

Great pics TD!!!
Hunter is a dragger too, but only with his back legs. Also, I only need to trim his nails on his back paws every second time I trim his front ones. Cassie's on the other hand have to be done every time, but they are softer and white, and much easier to do. She also don't mind it, and she eats the nails after, so its a treat built in

gosh you're too funny i gave up on manicures and nail polish 3 years ago there is just NO point when you have dogs

i'm very lucky that the beanies let me play with their feet without too much fuss, and hope all this hard work will pay off down the road, ie older dogs whose nail quicks are still reasonably short so as they age, their feetsies stay nice and tight.

wow. I love how nice and short you keep the nails. How often do you cut them?

normally every 10 days or so, depends on how fast their nails grow (seems to vary from month to month!). i was without a proper nail trimmer since November so I slacked a bit... to the delight of the beanies, LOL!

I clip nails similar to you.
I take the tips off and then shave back as far as I can go without hitting the quick. Once I have taken the length off I shave and round out the sides to dull them.
