Experiences with indoor potty?

I will be moving to a Toronto apartment with 2 elderly dogs that have always had access to warm weather and the outdoors. I am considering an indoor 'pet potty' that I can put on the balcony, or inside in winter.

Any recommendations as to what dogs actually like to use?

Could I simply lay some grass sod?

All suggestions and experiences welcome. Thanks
