Help! My cats has a bloody eye and cold symptoms- Graphic pic
We noticed our cat Loki started to have a swollen lower right eyelid 2 weeks ago. Loki has had clogged tear canals for much of his life and we are used to seeing brownish residue coming out of his eye, but when we noticed his eyelid was swollen, we took him to the vet immediately. He had also started sneezing many times a day.
The vet looked at his eye under a fluorescent light and dyed them yellow, but didn't tell us the result. He suggested using steroid eye drops (neomycin and polymyxin b sulfates and dexamethasone ophthalmic suspension - 5ml), which we used for a week. After a week Loki the residue we were used to see coming from his eye intensified and turned bloody. We took him to a second doctor who swabbed his eye and left to examine it, but didn't tell us one way or the other what he was looking for or what he found out. He prescribed Interferon - 6cc and Gentak - 5ml which we gave him for 5 days, each 3 times a day with a drop in each eye. Today the eye looks even worse (see picture that I just took), and we don't know what to do!? We looked at his lower eyelid and he seems to have a pinkish bump in the corner of his eye on the inside. We will probably stop giving him the eyedrops, as they seem to do no good. The other issue is that he has been sneezing for 2 weeks now and today when he breathes, sometimes there is a wheezing sound. Plus, he has been making little groaning/moaning sounds sometimes, and at these times he also is not very responsive to us, i.e. looks like he is not feeling well. Other times, he plays and purrs. He is eating and drinking normally. I should mention that prior to all this, Loki had surgery to remove a mast cell tumor from his right rear leg, had US/radiograph/needle aspiration which showed enlarged small intestine and spleen, but cancer not seen (or they could not tell anyway). We are thinking maybe while at vet he may have gotten feline virus (or respiratory cold?) of some kind, which the second vet mentioned possible be, but we don't know if he tested it when he did a swab of the eye. Has anyone encountered a similar situation or can give us qualified advise on what we should look into? Thanks! |
