Purina and the expanded recall
For anyone feeding their pets Purina products, they have an extremely good expanded FAQ on their site. They answer a lot of questions in a direct manner that many other companies are tiptoeing around with half truths and mentions of "proprietary information". Although some of you may not agree with some of their answers, at least they are making the information available for the consumers to make up their own decisions.

I'm not impressed. Most of the other major grocery brands have a very similar (indeed, nearly identical) FAQ. They're all just trying to preserve sales in the face of an unprecedented market volatility ...
All of these major brands were making the same claim: we ensure the best possible ingredients go into our food. That was never true, they outsourced and obviously were either unaware of the sources for their ingredients or didn't much care. They've never been honest with the consumer about their ingredients, they still aren't, and none of them have admitted that the reason for this tragedy rests on not just Menu Foods but the entire pet food industry and its corner-cutting practices. When they fess up and admit in full why the tragedy happened, tell us they are changing their practices, and join the call for regulation of pet food in Canada ... then I'll be impressed. I'm not holding my breath, needless to say! Their FAQ is still full of blatant lies, as well. Such as: "Why do you use wheat gluten in your products? Wheat gluten is a high quality ingredient that provides protein ... We have no plans to discontinue the use of wheat gluten in our products." etc etc ... "You may have read or heard recent media reports regarding pet food product recalls. This is just to clarify that no Royal Canin Canada products are currently being recalled." How many of these vague statements have we seen in the past month? It makes no mention of who their suppliers are, whether they use Menu Foods, etc. Purina is actually addressing questions such as "why do you use wheat gluten from China", "do you test for melamine", etc. I personally think that if every company answered these questions we wouldn't be constantly checking this forum trying to decipher what some of these companies are saying. Does this absolve them of all blame? Hell no, but the more information these companies give out the better. Last edited by wmarcello; April 1st, 2007 at 11:43 AM. |

Purina would be saying the same thing as Royal Canin if they weren't involved in the recall (which RC wasn't though I understand they are facing some other unrelated issue).
But because they are, they are forced to be a little more forthcoming (though still far short of total honesty). It looks more or less identical to many other statements from many other major brands that have been implicated. See for yourself: http://us.iams.com/iams/global/Product_Recall.htm and http://us.iams.com/iams/global/PGPetCareUpdateFAQ.htm or http://www.nutroproducts.com/mffaq.asp |

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheat_gluten_(food) I think that with such a widespread recall, even companies that aren't implicated (like Royal Canin) should be putting out statements with as much information as possible. Last edited by wmarcello; April 1st, 2007 at 12:34 PM. Reason: fix link |

But they should go alot farther than just trying to distance themselves and preserve their sales. They should overhaul their practices entirely, and call for the industry to cease many of their unsavoury practices. This tragedy was brought on by outsourcing and inadequate safeguards and monitoring (the use of melamine in the Chinese wheat industry was not a secret! They could have easily discovered this and tested samples before inclusion.) The industry in Canada needs regulation now. Human foods are regulated, why not pet foods? They are regulated in the US, why not in Canada? Which companies are calling for regulation? That's what responsible companies would do - call for industry wide regulation. Wheat gluten is used in human foods but we're not obligate carnivores like cats. Wheat gluten shouldn't be in cat food, period. People shouldn't be eating crops grown with massive inputs of toxins, either. |

I know humans, dogs and cats all have different digestive systems. But even when I was vegan and people tried to pass this wheat gluten thing off as a good thing I had to laugh. Although when refered to as human food most people call it seitan. Thats what they use to make tofukeys! |

They said it was a high quality ingredient (read human-quality ingredient, as it is...) that provides protein (which it does). While true, it is irrelevant when talking about obligate carnivores such as cats, as Edgewaters pointed out. |

List of Recalls
A supposedly comprehensive list of pet food product recalls, to date:
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,260784,00.html I also saw mention somewhere of a B&J brand (?) pig ears recalls that were from Chile, that were insufficiently irradiated and had salmonella contamination.

The ears were a recall before this menu foods thing. Like march 6thish..
Lot of places had that recall posted.. but the menu foods thing over shadowed it.

I wonder why the Purina FAQ doesn't mention that the Nestle division is opening a new plant in Tianjin Province this Friday, set to produce 20 000 tons of pet food annually using "local-purchased raw materials including bean, corn and wheat".

Remember a couple weeks ago when some companies said "our products are not affected by the recall" while others said "menu foods does not make our products"? There's a big difference, and dog food companies are the BEST at hiding things in open statements. It's all like poetry: what else can it mean? |
