am i walking muffincake too much?
Hi every one
I like to take muffincake for long walks, twice per day, up to 2 hours per day. Is that too much for my baby? Thanks everyone and I can't wait to become a regular on this amazing site. The posts that I have been reading have been very helpful and I have learned a lot about how to train muffy. Sara |

It would depend on the breed and age, in my opinion

Although she is an adult dog. Are you aware of the flat faced breeds and their intolerance to heat? If she struggles breathing stop immediately. They are prone to exhaustion. My Boston collapsed and it was only 20 min walk in 25 degrees C. So my rule is 20 maximum temperature and short walks in the heat.

And it depend where you're walking your dog too , what kind of surface it's? If you're walking on a concrete sidewalk on hot days with a pug dog that is way too much . I try to walk my dog in a park that has a lot of shade and dirt paths when it's hot out and bring water for both of us.
You should always carry water for your dog . You can buy a water bottle that has a tray attached to it. They had a strap so you can put over a shoulder. |

Although I don't 100% know the answer to this question, my guess is that if the walks are moderate and dooger isn't complaining (stops walking and refuses to get up, excessive panting, dooger looks sore the next day)....seems fine to me.
heat issues aside, do other members agree?

Seems fine to me too. I walk my two dogs (55lbs & 6lbs) for about an hour at a time (nice weather only) and the little one is fine with it. Have no experience with breeds with short noses though.

I found this web site about pug dogs and it said a 5 minutes walk would be enough. My dog Marty has bronchitis and I take him for shorter walks when very cold or hot . He will take long nap when he get home after a 10 minutes a walk . |

Most dogs just love those nice long walks if they are well conditioned to the weather and the surfaces. BUT, I agree, being a pug, you have to carefully evaluate how well yours is breathing and moving. The confirmation really matters here - some really can't be walked long at all, which is a crime of breeding. However, if yours is doing well and you're very in tune to how well things are going, I would say use your judgement.

Thanks for the responses. Muffy loves to walk... I just wanted to make sure that I am not giving her too much exercise when we gets home she will sleep for several hours.

That is the problem , dogs really don't know when to stop walking . My dog loves to run but he will overdo it and start getting shot of breath and have trouble breathing . So I can't let him over excited when it very hot or cold out .
