Day Time Training

I was wondering if any one has any tips for day time training.

My 2, almost 6 month old Border Collies are home in the day by themself. They are not kenneled but they are kept in their puppy playland in the basement. It is undevloped but has older carpet, older furniture and bones and toys galore. That is their place. My problem is they don't go to the bathroom in the house once we are home and are getting pretty good at waiting until morning, (4-5days a week they wait until morning) so their bladders are maturing. During the day they have their corner where they go on "puppy pads". I don't know how to break them of the habit. Now, are they ever going to wait until we get home or is the full day just to long? My greyhound at my parents house does wait until some one is home but I suppose the longest she is alone is 6 hrs whereas the BC are alone for 8hrs.

Any ideas? Or should we just be prepared for them always going in the basement on their pads just because of the length of time they are alone.

Thanks
