Dog has abdominal pain/discomfort

Hello, my 3 year old golden doodle stopped sleeping through the night on Thursday night. He had a regular poo and pee around 1:30 am but kept pacing back and forth for the rest of the night. In the morning he went to the park, chased the ball and seemed like his old self until he came home. Throughout the day his weird behaviour continued, he kept pacing around the house and had a hard time staying down once he would lay down. Last night at around 4:00 am we woke up with him crying/whimpering and running around the room in obvious pain. We took him to the emergency clinic and the Vet was able to find that when she touched part of his abdominal area he cried out in pain again. They did xrays and a CPL Snap test and everything looked normal. The vet prescribed Tramadol (pain medication). Two hours after taking the Tramadol he vomited (for the first time). Didn't feed him yet today but he took two regular poos and a diarrhea one. Is this a good sign? What should we do next? The emergency clinic said that if he vomits again, we should take him in for further testing (ultrasound) and intravenous. Hearing him cry and not being able to do anything about it breaks my heart...Help please!!!!

Sorry, you must sick yourself with worry. A regular poop is often taken as a sign there is not a blockage but those are very confounding symptoms. I hope he is OK.

Thank you for replying. I am worried sick, every time I hear him cry I feel physically sick. Being 6 months pregnant is not the best time to deal with this...

Sorry I have no advice for you except maybe a revisit to your vet. I am sure being 6 mths pregnant really does not help at all. Let us know how he is doing over the next few days. patti oh, and, welcome!

Same this morning? Vomit or not, if he still seems to be in pain I'd be back to the Vet. Good thoughts for both of you.

Thanks for the follow up. He vomited at 4:00 am so we are back at the emergency clinic again. Hopefully the ultrasound will give us more insight on what is happening. Thank you for the good thoughts, much appreciated.

We hope so as well. They just ran full blood tests and everything looks fine. The ultrasound specialist will not get here for another couple of hours, so we had to leave Murphy at the clinic until the specialist gets there At this point we are just playing the waiting game. I pray to God the ultrasound will find something. Thank you for the encouraging words

A little update on Murphy's condition...The ultrasound showed an area on his small intestine that was very irritated and the specialist said that there is a very high possibility that there is a foreign object stuck in there. We went ahead with surgery only to be told that nothing was found stuck in his small intestine. Part of his small intestine was extremely irritated. The vet took tissue samples to be sent in for a biopsy tomorrow morning (it will take a week to get the results). Since the emergency clinic closes at 8:00 am on Monday morning, we have to transfer Murphy to our vet's clinic tomorrow morning.
Bottom line is that we still do not know what is wrong with Murphy and until we get the biopsy results there is nothing we can do.
Anyone encountered a similar condition? Any ideas what it might be? The vet said it could be Irritable Bowel Disease or bunch of other things.
Thanks!

Have not had that so I can only offer more good wishes. I have had to transfer from regular VEt to EVet, and back, because of their weird hours and working arrangement and I HATE that. Found a new Vet.

Thank you, good wishes are more than welcomed!!! We are trying to be positive but this is an emotional roller coaster...I never had a pet before and never thought that their pain will have such an effect on me...

I'm sorry Murphy's having such a difficult time. I know how hard it is to have a dog that's sick and you don't have any answers.

We did have a dog with inflammatory bowel disease, diagnosed with a punch biopsy. It's a difficult disease to manage, but you can do it if that's what it turns out to be. I know it's a futile piece of advice since it's impossible to not worry, but try not to worry too much until you know what you're dealing with. For us, the biopsy ended a 3 month attempt to diagnose what was wrong with Evan and we nearly lost him before getting the answer. You, on the other hand, will find out before he gets critical and that's a good thing!

We've also had dogs in the past develop irritation of the intestine and it turned out to be temporary. I always figured they'd eaten something they shouldn't have and it got temporarily lodged--long enough to cause irritation but not a full blockage. One dog went in for exploratory surgery, just like Murphy did, and all they found was the irritation but no cause. As the incision healed, the symptoms of the intestinal distress also abated, and the dog recovered fully with no recurrence. So you could just as well get good news as bad. I'm hoping for really good results for Murphy!

Thank you so much for the encouragement, it means the world to us!!! We transferred him to his regular vet early this morning when the emergency clinic closed. The vet said he will let us know later in the day if he needs to spend another night at the emergency clinic since the regular vet's office closes at 7:00 pm and they do not have any overnight staff. Poor guy was so drugged he didn't even react when he saw us. It was so hard seeing him like that. He is the happiest dog I know, loves all people, kids and animals...he is everybody's friend. All the dogs and dog owners in the neighborhood love him because he is so friendly and gentle with everybody...We take such great care of him...he only eats the best dog food. No human food allowed, not too many treats either. Gets 30 minutes running time at the park in the morning, two additional 1 hour walks the rest of the day. We take him to the trails for him to run around for almost an hour every Saturday and Sunday morning. Inside the house he is so lazy and low maintenance...All his regular vet check-ups so far have been perfect...I just don't understand...
Thank you again for your kind words and encouragement.
