water guns???
I have noticed a few times people talking about water guns in order to correct behavior.
I had never heard of this before, just looking for some advice on if, when and where you should use the water gun. Thanks! |

Hey! Water guns or spray bottles can work great, but some dogs actually like being sprayed with water! My 3 dogs are scared of being sprayed so all I have to do now is point it at them, and they stop whatever they were doing that I don't want them to do. I don't use it often, just when it's handy. I don't want them to get used to it and stop responding to it. You can use it for most behavioural issues like barking, chewing, or play biting, but just remember that it doesn't actually "fix" the problem. Most things like treats, clickers, and other crap like that just mask the issues. It's like using treats to get the dog to come to you offleash, but what do you use if you forget the treats? The dog then has no reason to listen to you. We all have to establish Alpha with our dogs so they remember to always respect us. Just my rant for this post!!!!

I've used a water gun/spray bottle on my cats when they scratch something they shouldn't, like the baby's play yard or when they try to go behind the entertainment center (wires and cords galore) Just be careful what's behind them in case you miss!
You don't need to spray a ton of water, if you're referring to cats, one spray and they're gone! They hate water, usually. Hopefully the dog ppl of this site will say when they use it for their dogs. Good Luck! |

Oh yeah! sorry! I guess I should make sure you're talking about dogs, and not cats. If you are talking about cats, it is really effective. I use it on my 2 kitties all the time when they getup on the sounters or near our food when we're eating.

I used it on my dogs. I prefer to use it when they can't see me (ie: spraying it while hiding behind a wall) because they'd automatically think "What the heck? Where'd that come from? Mom/God must be everywhere."
It's really useful for things like jumping up on window ledges, counter surfing, barking, nipping, etc. I have two Barking Sheepdogs.. er.. Shetland Sheepdogs (LOL ). I swear, one is a mouth with legs attached. It works really nicely for him. I said "ENOUGH!" while spraying him and after a while, just saying "enough" was sufficient. |

Yes, I am asking for my dog. I have two cats also but they never give me any problem, they are the best behaved cats, they never scratch, claw or bite.
I was actually thinking of using this method for my newly adopted Pom, she is not getting along with my other dog(sheltie). She has bit her twice and my daughter one. She took over my bedroom and growls at anyone who comes into it besides myself. I am nervous because I am going away for a week with my niece and nephew and taking my dogs with me and I am scared how she is going to be with them. They are only 3 and 6 years old. Thanks for the feedback so far though! |

Spraying her won't help much. You need to do some serious Alpha training. Let her know that YOU are the boss and that her dominant behaviour will NOT be tolerated. Let her and your other dog(s) work out their own issues. That's how canine communicate with eachother. If your pom starts picking fights with your other one(s) for no reason, then discipline her. We as humans are always interrupting nature and most of the time with dogs and such, we really don't need too. They learn quite well from eachother. E-mail me at doggieden@shaw.ca if you want me to go through more training tips and such with you. Incase you are wondering where I get this from, I am a certified trainer/educator here in Calgary. Too long to post training stuff here!
