How to give a sick cat medication

Hello,

My cat is sick with upper respiratory infection and coughing. I took him to the vet and he give me antibiotics to give him, 2 times a day. But, every time I try to give it to him he coughs it back out.

What I am doing now, is opening his mouth and squeezing the drops into it, then he coughs it out.

Any suggestion on how to get my cat to take his medication?

Help!

If he's actually COUGHING, that tells me that the liquid is going straight down his throat and he's breathing in some of it.

This is a dangerous situation - a cat can very easily develop a life threatening condition known as "aspiration pneumonia" after events like this.

Do not shoot the liquid straight "down the hatch"! You should inject the med into the side/corner "pocket" of his mouth, then hold his mouth closed and massage his throat and/or gently blow against his nose, which will stimulate his swallowing. And, in terms of positioning for all this, you should be kneeling over him with him between your legs.

Is it something you cam mix in with food? Ask your vet if that might be okay, then take a small bit of food and add the drops to it and give her some of it.

Mine aren't too difficult. I hold them against me, but I don't tip their head too far back. I hold their head and position the dropper on their mouth, as I'm holding their mouth. This is the easiest way for me and they get their medicine well.

Great suggestion ancient. If it can be mixed with a small amount of food which the cat then eats you know he is getting the meds he needs.

Could you ask your vet if the meds are available in a pill? I find pilling my bunch easier than liquid. Or, alternately, instead of an eye dropper, how about a syringe? That may be easier too.

Oh yeah, if you can use pill pockets or if you can hind their pill in some soft snack they like that's even better.

When I was giving my Czari her meds, I'd give them to her in some Pounce hairball treats. LOL, now when I give her a treat with no pill, she looks at me as if to say "Hey, something's missing." and she won't eat it!

Many people don't realize the dangers of pilling and the precautions that need to be taken.

My Rocky has a great appetite,so I put his pill in a teaspoon of food, mash it up and whatch to make sure he eats it all, then he gets the rest of his food.
I believe the OP said this was a liquid meds,I don't know if you can do the same and of course it has to be wet food.
Hopefully he's not to sick to eat

Thank's from me too,it certainly makes sense and something I have not even thought about.
I am fortunate,as Rocky has no problems with his appetite and happily laps up his food crushed pill and all.

I have had great success at quickly following up a pilling with some watered down cat food that I have ready in a plastic syringe. It makes it soooo much easier.
