Is Tylenol 3 safe for dogs?
My 8 year old Rhodesian Ridgeback has had a neerve disorder that is affecting his back legs for about 10 months now. He has hind limb lameness and knuckles severely. He can't run, and he drags his feet when he walks. I have tried chiropractic, and have also tried about 4 months of accupuncture which did not seem to do alot. After recently visiting one of the best Vets in town, I expressed my concern that my dog is having pain because he growls when he lies down. I tried him on Meloxicam, and he seemed worse like he was drunk and had the stumbles. The vet found this very unusual but said he may have a reaction to it. So, he had given me tylenol 3 for pain. I was told to give him 1 pill 2 times a day for 3 weeks. I am also giving him prednisone. I am cooncerned that this 3 weeks on T3's can kill him because I have read so much negativity about giving dogs Tylenol. He is a 110 lb dog. Any suggestions?

It's not unusual for dogs who are post-operative to be prescribed Tylenol 3's for pain management and to reduce inflammation but it doesn't sound like your dog's condition is something that will improve in a few weeks. Has something happened ~ an injury ~ that has caused his nerve disorder to worsen which would warrant short-term steroid and Tylenol use ?

From all I've ever heard, acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol, is toxic to dogs. I used to dogsit for one that had organ damage because it got into Tylenol as a pup.
I don't know about the codeine component to the Tylenol 3--not sure if it's safe for dogs or not. But, given all the new NSAIDS available for use by vets, I guess I'm a little surprised that your vet recommended the use of Tylenol 3 for your dog! I would never give it to one of mine. Did the vet say specifically why he was prescribing the T3 given acetaminophen's known toxicity in dogs? I think you should probably talk to the vet again and ask--and if you still have doubts, get a second opinion.

Tylenol 3? Well, I stand corrected then, MMM--I've never heard Tylenol prescribed for dogs before!

oh that note, also realize that if Tylanol were asking for approval for OTC availablilty... it would not pass. please be very careful when taking ANY NSAIDs.

I know that most if not all of the pet-friendly websites indicate that Tylenol should never be used with dogs and I am absolutely not suggesting that anyone use acetaminophen /Tylenol without direction and supervision by a Vet but I do want to correct misinformation and assure Roadie that it's not uncommon for Vets to prescribe Tylenol for use in pain management...
