Melinda I have never had to worry about ticks but I have heard the Frontline and Advantage are the best for ticks. I also heard that Oil of Oregano will keep them at bay as well. I dont know if it would be harmful for a dog but if you tried a dab at the back of the head it might help and hopefully Brina cant reach it!...

BTW I feel sorry for you cause those ticks are NASTY! they give me the creeps!

Not sure if Vectra 3D is available in Canada but it might be worth asking your vet about it. Supposedly works better than Frontline or Advantage.

Ticks running rampant is NO exaggeration. I am pulling multiple ticks off Jasper everyday and he is only out for about 10 minutes. .

I had a conversation with my vet about Revolution and he's had a few complaints that it was not working as well as it used to. However, cat's Revolution doesn't include tick pesticide, so our discussion was about fleas.

I called Bayer and Pfizer and both told me the same thing, neither product is a repellant, both will kill the tick AFTER it bites, sometimes before they feed , but most times after they are engorged...umm so why have it? the one tech told me its so that hopefully they can get rid of "family" of ticks...ain't gonna happen, and yes love4himmies, its rampant in ontario right now, they said they are getting numerous calls from vets and pet owners from this area daily.

Winston, anything is worth a try, I still say its because lawns are no longer being sprayed for weeds.......

I had to buy 2 months supply of Advantage after I found a flea and flea-poop on Vinnie..

Melinda here is some interesting information on tick repellant

Tick Repellent For Humans

Garlic
Ticks cannot tolerate the smell of garlic. This is one of the best natural deterrents for ticks. Take raw garlic or garlic pills along with your regular diet to repel ticks.

Neem
Neem oil has been used for ages to get rid of various pests. You can either use neem oil or soak neem leaves in hot water and then apply this on the skin.

Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is also very effective in fighting of ticks. Mix two ounces of tea tree oil in water and pour it in a spray bottle. Spray this regularly on your skin.

For Pets
Natural Prevention

* Healthy pets have fewer ticks and other parasites. So, always keep your pets healthy.
* Avoid stress in the pets.
* Add half a teaspoon of brewer’s yeast to the pet’s daily diet to provide B complex vitamins.
* Give small quantities of garlic to the pets. Garlic makes the animal taste unpleasant to the fleas and ticks. You can give garlic by grating it to the pet’s food.
* While bathing, shampoo the pet with citrus oil. This is also very good in removing fleas and ticks.
* Also, rinse the fur with apple cider vinegar. Fleas and ticks cannot tolerate the smell and so leave the pet alone.
* In the collar area of the pet, put a drop of lemon oil or rosemary oil.
* Another good way to repel ticks is to use a mixture of lavender, lemongrass, and geranium oils.
* Mixture of lavender, lemongrass, peppermint, and citronella is quite effective in repelling fleas.
* There are many other natural repellents like cedar, eucalyptus, myrrh, neem and rosewood.
* Yet another easy homemade repellent is to use lemon. Take 6 lemons and cut in half. Boil these in a quart of water and steep for a few hours. Strain the solution and pour it into a spray bottle. Spray the solution on the pet’s fur but avoid the eyes.
* To repel ticks from the collars add a few drops of rose geranium on it.
* Another very good essential oil for repelling ticks is the American tickweed.
* Mix 2 tablespoon of almond oil and 25 drops of rose geranium in a jar. Shake it thoroughly to blend. Add a few drops on the skin to repel ticks.

Just to add on to Winston's post above, those remedies may be safe for dogs but should never be used on cats. Garlic can cause Heinz Body anemia, and essential oils (especially tea tree oil) are very toxic to cats (can cause liver failure). I wouldn't even use essential oils on a dog that lives with cats. Brewer's yeast is a common allergen, so I'd stay away from that as well.

Sorry, just had to clarify that in case someone else reads this thread and tries some of these suggestions on their kitties.

Melinda, if ticks are really prevalent, you'll likely have to stick with a chemical product. Frontline is pretty effective. This year we've added a preventic collar for times we're likely to get into heavy ticks. Together they make a pretty good line of defense, but we still need to do frequent body checks.

The Frontline will not repel ticks, but kills most of them before they attach. Of the ones that attach, most will die before being able to transmit diseases present (generally takes 24 or more hours). Of the many hundreds we see, many hundreds die, some attach and a very few survive regardless of what we're using. So keep up with the body checks, too.

We've tried a bunch of natural remedies. They just don't stand up to the onslaught of ticks here.

Hazel, put it this way, I just picked 3 engorged ones and roughly about 8 that had just latched on.

We're having a similar season here, Melinda. Can't wait for the snow to fly for just that reason!!!

Revolution is pretty useless on the ticks around here.

Btw, Advantage is for fleas only, for ticks you need to use their combo product Advantix.
