She is a big one Chico ....good luck in attracting Monarchs this year, it's gonna be tricky though, I have 'em all .....
Yesterday I took the guys out back for the first time in weeks and couldn't believe the amount of milkweed that has sprouted out there this year and we all know what that means |

Chico I don't know if they sell wild milkweed or not...we have oodles up here I guess I can dig some up and when I go to see 14k next month take it to her place.....Swamp Milkwood apparently is even better, I know of one place around here that sells it.

wow Chico, that bush is pretty and huge! Do the blooms smell?
I heard/read milkweed is considered a very bad weed and people are not suppose to grow it. I think that is sad especially when the monarchs need it to survive.

Chico2 is that the same plant we call the Butterfly bush here, Buddleja? I used to spell it differently but my Botanica of garden plants tells me this is the way it's spelt now. I'd love a purple one, I only have white. On a hot day the perfume is amazing, no wonder the butterflies love it.

Gorgeous plant, chico, and it obviously is lovin' this summer Look at all those blooms!!!!
Native plant nurseries usually offer them as bare roots ready for planting. Choose your spot wisely, though--common milkweed is lovely and the monarchs use it, but it sends out rhizomes each year and sprouts up in the lawn and the rest of the garden. I used to just nip the sprouts off when they were a couple inches tall if I noticed them in the neighbors yard (which I did often ... whoopsie ) Not all milkweeds are that invasive--I have whorled milkweed that seems less robust, and butterfly weed which is the orange milkweed that grows wild out here--both bought from a native plant nursery. The common milkweed that grows in my hummingbird garden, though, is a volunteer.

Goldfields, yes that's what it's called here too,Budleja, but we just call it a Butterfly bush.
I had my first Monarch come today,I took a pic,but will make a new thread for it. Klmc,it's almost impossible to kill a B,Bush,as long as you cut them down almost to the ground every spring, they'll keep flourishing. Hazel,If I get one of those,I'll have to find a spot, where it does not creep in to my garden, but I love something that will attract butterflies.
