How safe is it to fly my dog long haul?
Hi Everyone i'm new here!
We live in England (me, my partner, 10 month old son and stanley the dog)and was thinking about moving to Canada..... we have researched alot and qualify to live and work in Canada.... the only thing that is stopping us is, we want to take our dog with us but dont want to put him at risk. Stanley is a big boy - Great Dane x Ridgeback and very nervous of new people. Does anyone know the risks of flying dogs long haul? Any info would be great as Stanly means the world to us! thanks guys xx |

I know a young man and his wife who moved from England with a beautiful Husky,he said there was no problem and also where they go,so does their 4-legged familymember.
He did mention it was costly, but worth every penny. If you don't bring him, you'll regret itI did, adopting out our dog before moving from Sweden

One of my old dog park buddies just returned home to New Zealand from Canada, with her dog. No issues. Of course there is a quarantine period first, which you may want to check into.
Your dog should be fine. |

Breeders and world level competitors in dog sports routinely fly their fully grown dogs back and forth across continents. I personally have never heard of a single bad story. Just make sure to familiarize yourself with the importation regulations that will apply to you, vaccination and health records required, any additional documentation and fees, size and type of container, etc.
I do know some one who moved here from England, adopted a dog here, and took her with them when they went back for a vacation for a few weeks, then flew back to Canada with her. They had a great time. As long as you're prepared from the legal stand point and your dog doesn't have any serious underlying health problems it shouldn't be a problem. |

I Agree
I have friends that moved to Canada from Ireland and they brought their Jack Russel with them. Be prepared for a long haul, but everyone arrived safe and sound, even if the pup did poop in the airport

One other thing
Oops, I forgot one other thing, I don't know if this will help since I'm assuming you wont have access to Stanley, but my friend gave her little gal some Rescue Remedy during the flight to help keep her calm and relaxed.

Definitely Doable
Hi,
We shipped our two rescue dogs home with us from Asia to Canada and it all worked out. We had the help of a company that specialises in pet transport. However we chose not to use any medication as this can have adverse effects. Very important to keep the temperature in mind depending on time of year you are shipping. The best person to help you answer this question is your vet who can assess whether or not your pet is fit to fly. Bonne Voyage! |

Unless it's AA. Have you heard the famous case of Jack, the cat that got lost in JFK in NY? Also some of their scary statistics came up as well. BTW miraculously Jack was found after 2 months.
But what happened to Jack the cat that was not an everyday event so going back to the subject it is doable like it's been said and you should definitely bring him Both Canada and England are in the rabies free countries list so I think it would be even easier to travel with Stanley~ Specialized companies that will travel with your pets for you are really awesome if it's a good one the down side is that OUCH! Very pricey >.<

I've heard "No medication" because it's amplified when high in the sky.....

He wasn't actually "found", as American Airlines did very little to look for him - he fell through some ceiling tiles into the customs office. And was euthanized just the other day because his severe wounds weren't healing, partly due to the hepatic lipidosis he'd developed from starvation. So tragic. http://www.star-telegram.com/2011/11...-airlines.html

I promise to stick to topic now, I'm just shocked to find out Jack crossed the rainbow bridge. Post edited because I found something that might be of stanleybigpaws interest http://www.continental.com/web/en-US...s/default.aspx

Hi my family recently moved to Edmonton we are now having our 11 year old German Shepherd sent out to us. I am worried because she is a very anxious girl. Any suggestions to keep her calm and relaxed for the flight?
I also read a previous post about sending them as luggage and only costing around $50.00, I was quoted $400.00 for her which I think is ridiculous. Any suggestions? Thanks |
