Unhappy We buried a young Cardinal today

As we were having dinner,a bird flew in to our patio-doors:sad:it was a beautiful young Cardinal.
Sometimes birds will be in shock and after a while will fly off,but this girl Cardinal seemed broken.
Hubby picked her up,we checked her out,she was trying to fly,but could not.
I am crying for this little girl, not really knowing what to do,but she solved the problem by dying in my hands:sad:
We buried her right beside Peppis spot.
Beautiful little bird,so sorry we could not make you whole again:sad:

So sad when that happens.

cardinal...

Our neighbors were having a terrible problem with young birds hitting their windows. They finally hung up some twirling metal icicle looking things--they bought them at the garden shop--and hung them under the eaves in front of the windows. Works like a charm!

L4H,we later saw a mom and pop Cardinal feeding a young bird, probably a sibling to our unfortunate little girl.
I've also noticed, several of the Gracklers(black-birds)have light-coloured legs and strange skin around the eyes, some kind of disease
One year we had Sparrows dying, they were blind,I do not use pesticide and we now have a pesiticide-ban in Oakville, hopefully that will help the birds.

We have a mating pair of cardinals that visit our feeders, they were madly feeding babies (non stop visits a couple of weeks ago), but I haven't seen them out with any babies. I hope their babies didn't die:sad:.

L4H,yes,I think the babies are lucky if they survive to the point where they can fly.
My birdhouses were raided, one morning there were no more Sparrow-babies and stuffing hanging out of the opening:sad:
The Blue Jays are always keeping an eye on our bird-houses
Maybe your Cardinal-babies are just not ready to fly yet,I hope so

I know how you feel--it seems like such a sad waste.

Have you tried something shiny outside the window? The problem with inside blinds is that the bird sees a reflection at certain times of the day that will make the inside blinds invisible--to them it looks like they can fly right through. When our neighbors put up the sparkly twirly things, it seems like the birds were distracted by it and slowed down--so even if they do hit the window, it's not fatal anymore! Maybe a few small mylar wind-socks or sculptures that throw the interference colors would help?

Around here, the house finches pass around a fatal conjunctivitis that causes eye inflammation and feather loss on the face. I saw a chickadee in winter that had what looked like that, even though I've never heard that it can be passed to other species. I'm pretty sure, though, that the chickadee kicked it--it seemed like the feathers filled back in and by spring I couldn't tell it from the others. So I'm that it survived!

Once the babies are out, they can get pretty far from the nest pretty quickly. Unless you see them as they leave the nest, it's not too hard to miss them entirely once they've fledged. So they may be out and about and doing well.

Hazel,I kind of took part in a backyard bird-counting thing from Cornell University and the eye problem with the House-Finches was widespread, even here.
I love the House Finch, they sing so pretty, but we have none around anymore:sad:
I am going to get something sparkly in front of the doors
