More blooms
Got some new blooms!
Peony in the sunshine and then on cloudy day. The yellow seems to fade really fast. But they are still pretty. Some new blooms on another Siberian Iris. I don't know why the camera is showing this as another blue because it's a dark purple blue to the eye. My camera seems to be color blind with Iris but portrays all the other colors correctly.

Some Foxglove and wild pink Malva. I don't know where the Malva comes from, they are "volunteers." But think I will keep them. Lots of buds for blooms to come in future.

Finally, some Valerian flowers and broccoli! Thought I would take a pic of the broccoli before it was cut and eaten for supper.

I think that's the same musk mallow Malva that I have, Ceara! I love it--it's listed as alien in my wildflower book but I tolerate it cuz it's so pretty! (It's a hard job to tolerate beautiful "weeds", but someone has to do it! )
The peonies are gorgeous I really love peonies...mine are done for the year, though. And I can see part of the broccoli ( ), but I think I'll have to come back for the rest of the pics...still having connection troubles Oh, and by the way, I have some pics of the blooming wild bee balm or purple bergamot--still not 100% sure of which it is--but I don't have the bandwidth to upload the pics. I haven't forgotten, though.

Finally got a decent connection and can see the irises That Valerian is beautiful--what does the whole plant look like? I've heard of it and probably seen it from afar, but for the life of me, I can't picture it. How tall does it get?
Unfortunately, good connection or not, I don't have time to post pics right now! later!

The Valerian has sort of light green ladder style foliage. The total height with the flowers is somewhere between 3-4 feet tall. I'd have to measure. They come up over my waist and I'm almost 6 ft tall, so I guess that's about right.
I started them from seed 3 summers ago, and this is first time they've flowered. Has a delicate scent too, but don't know how to describe it. Behind it in the pic is Mugwort, in case you were curious. And that broccoli was TASTY! Was able to cut 3 stalks of it today.

Mugwort, eh? Those leaves? I noticed them--thought they were Valerian...guess not, eh?
I love the shape of the mugwort leaves--very nice texture. Do they bloom?

I like them because the underside of the leaves is kind of white/silvery and it flashes when the wind blows.

Thank you! Oh forgot to tell you, the big seeds you sent that I thought were runner beans? They all formed some sort of slimy yellow fungus type gunk and never germinated. The rest was too late to start them this year but I sure will next spring! Thanks again for your generosity. Hope you're doing well!

One advantage you have where you live that we don't. Our Iris and Peony are long gone. You are just enjoying yours now. Very pretty!
A customer last year told me she ripped all of her Valarian out of her garden after hearing that it affected her menstration adversely. Supposedly it cause lots of cramping if you got near the plant. I laughed at her story. Never heard that. It is used in some medical situations. You just have to be careful. Your foxglove is beautiful! I love that plant. Mine succumbed to crowding. I think I may still have some seed somewhere though. I'll sign up for some of the Malva seeds when they are ready please. |

What Zone are you in 14+? It's 4a here. I'm just curious why you get so much earlier blooms. That's a funny story. I think the Valerian is very attractive just for its foliage. I'll get Malva seeds for you! These make a pretty good sized tap root that kind of resemble parsnip. I noticed they don't transplant well though. But if you were really into it, that plant could probably be propagated through root cuttings. I have other Malva of the Zebrina type coming and they should bloom in the next couple of weeks, if not sooner. Quote:
Like the attached pic but made with sticks instead of buying it.

Wow Ceara, your Peonies are beautiful, mine are all done as are Irises around here, love the Fox-Glove,but I never had much luck with them:sad:
TQ,it's cold here too, nights it's only +10C,but daytime in the 20C+range. I actually think it's been good for gardening, although blooming seems to be a little slow. It looks like my Bee-Balm is not going to be red this year, weird

Chico, it may have cross pollinated with the wild bergamot, which is a light lavendar color. Looks like bee balm, only the different color.

My BeeBalm is pink. It's been blooming for the last week or so. I wanted red but I guess ordered pink seeds.
Ceara - I am in Zone 6. So is chico, Sylvie, Winston, kmcallum, and everyone else in this area. Then there are the sub-zones within the zones. For instance, we are on a "mountain" (not really but the folks around here have illusions of grandeur). The same plants I have just coming out up here have already blomed two weeks earlier downtown. They are on flat land. We are five minutes away from town. |

Holy cats! Zone 6?!? We're only a 4 here in a mild year and tend toward 3! No fair!!!
I don't know, chico...the only thing I can think of is that maybe the plant reseeded after being crosspolinated by bees? This is what the wild bergamot (a close relative in the Monarda family) looks like: This plant was actually growing in a subprime spot in the shade of the sumac and didn't come back this year as far as I can tell

Hazel don't worry, you're in the same zone as me! We'll stick together.
Here's a couple more pics. This time a white Siberian Iris. Only one has bloomed in that group so far, but I wanted to get the pretty raindrops in the picture. Also more of that purple-blue Siberian Iris, and some Maltese Cross. And the first Lollypop Lily of the season! They are lovely but fade so fast.
