sick chocolate lab
I have a chocolate lab that is around 1 1/2 years old. I adopted her through the pound after someone abandoned her. (She was, apparently, hit by a car which broke her nose.) Since I have had her, she has done well to go outside to go to the bathroom. She is otherwise mostly a housedog. For the past week, however, she has had a stomach ache. I have found piles and "squirts" of bloody diarrhea all in my carpet. She only does this during the night. Otherwise she still goes outside, but it's still bloody diarrhea. She does not act sick in any way. She is still a typical, hyper, fun-loving lab. The vet at the closest veterinary hospital (2hours away) said that they were seeing a lot of this, but didn't know what was causing it. She told me to give her 2 tablets of Immodium and take away her food for 24 hours to let her stomach settle.
Obviously, I have had to return the dog's food. (Yes, she still has an appetite-a large one!) I still give her the Immodium, but it doesn't seem to be working. I am worried that she may be bleeding internally, but she still doesn't act sick after a week of this. Any idea on what could be causing this? Better yet, any ideas on how I can treat this? |

Awwww! Im thinking maybe she ate something she shouldnt have, maybe its caught.. But since you said the vet has been seeing this recently hmmm i dunno, but obviously it isnt good.
Im thinking that it could be Giardia, do you let your lab play in a creek, lake or other stagnent water? (since i know they LOVE!! water) Symptoms of Giardia are... stomach cramps, bloody stool, diarrhea, vomiting. Humans CAN get this if the dog licks their face etc. I would reccomend taking your dog, even though it is 2 hours away and get them to do a "fecal test" specify you want them to check for giardia... And it isnt that easy to treat so if it is giardia the sooner you take her in the better.. Ill keep looking around for other possible causes... and ill post in a few.. CLL

1. http://www.priory.com/vet/giardia.htm
2. http://www.agric.gov.ab.ca/agdex/600/63-31.html Check out those 2 very good sites on giardia... this could very well be whats wrong with your dog. (Though I'm not a vet obviously, so consult yours) There is a vaccine you can get, yearly I believe... although it isnt necessary but if your dog is like ours and tries for the creek every chance he gets then this would probably be a good vaccine to get, someone told me that it is sometimes passed through raccoon urine.. so if youre in a wooded area with a creek or a pond.. this may be an important vaccine for you. The vets on these boards only answer every so often, chances are you'll find out what's wrong with your dog before they have a chance to reply.. and seeing they dont reply to every question... dont wait around for them! I hope i helped, Goodluck CLL
