my cat has a very hot tongue

I have a 11 year old tom cat who is very loving but shy. recently He has picked up a habit of licking everyone he comes in contact with and I have noticed that the temperture of his tongue is really Hot! I have not taken his temp and otherwise he seems fine. eating well, sleeping well, but has started becoming more of a homebody then ever. He was always an outdoor cat who enjoys hunting and spent a lot of his time outdoors. I wonder if his behavior is relevant to his age and if the temp of his tongue indicates something I might not be aware of.

He is probably fine, but the licking would bother me if it is new behaviour. Worth a vet visit.
