Good, lower-priced cat food?
With the big scare going on, I've finally been successful in getting my family to change the crappy foods they've been feeding their doggies. Yay! Everybody's on good stuff now.
My mom has two cats though, and I know nothing about kitty foods. Does anybody have a good, not-involved-in-any-way-with-the-recall, reasonably priced cat food to recommend? She's looking for a dry food, but really she doesn't have a lot of money to spend at all... they're giving up a bit themselves to feed their dog and kitties better food now, so any ultra premium types are probably out of the picture. Thanks for any suggestions! |

Felidae is a great food (and has no connection to the recall) and is usually well priced. A 5lbs bag runs about $13. I know this is a lot more expensive than the grocery store brands, but you end up feeding a lot less so it ends up being pretty cheap in the long run

I feed my kitten Solid Gold, and she loves it,i did buy a bag of dry Innova Evo that i am blending in w/ it,and eventually will keep her on ,but as far as wet food goes i tried em all and Solid Gold is the only one she does not turn her nose up to.

my kittens like Innova, seems like it cost alot for a little bag, but they need so little, so it doesnt end up being anymore expensive. and their fur is super duper nice.

What is the price range and size of bag that you think would work?

Thanks for the ideas, guys!
Gypsy_girl, she normally pays about $15 for a 10 kg bag for her 2 kitties. She knows, since I've been telling her over and over, that she's going to pay more for a good food but also feed a bit less too. I'd just like to steer her towards something that won't break the bank and will be better for the kitties... she's feeding Whiskas right now. From what I've read, I guess Felidae is probably the most reasonably priced decent food, eh? |

You need to feed less per day, so your bag will last longuer.

Yeah, felidae is probably the best deal...
And Frenchy's right. The better food has more easily absorbed nutrition, so you feed less to give your kitty the same amount of protein and calories a day. (They just don't absorb very much of the crap food). |

Kirkland's. Not the best, but better AND cheaper than the store brands. Also not involved in the recall in any way (though Diamond did have a recall about . . . six months ago? Kirkland's wasn't part of it, though.)

Kirkland, Technical or Summit are my vote! Felidae is great too if you can afford it. The best way to determine if you will be feeding less (or the same) is to compare the calories per cup.
Technical Cat 366 ( has a far amount of corn and corn protein but hence the price) Summit Cat Chicken Indoor 520 (human grade ingredients Summit 3 meat 440 (uses corn protein and barley and oats) human grade ingredients Felidae 521 (human grade ingredients) Kirkland (if someone has a bag the kcals are on the back) |

It's funny, but about a month ago, before the Menu Foods problems came up, the local Costco was focusing on the change in the Kirkland pet foods to a more natural diet, and stressing the no corn/no byproducts ingredients.
We did get the Kirkland cat food for our cat and were going to switch her over anyway. When the news came out about the Science Diet - well, that bag went into the trash, even though it was basically full. She's on Kirkland now.
