Question about Dog Supplement Product - Is it safe?
Back in October, my cousin went to a pet expo and was given, by a distributor, a bottle of a pet supplement called "Healthy Calm" by Renew Life. She doesn't have a dog (she works for a bird rescue) so she gave the bottle to me.
I haven't had a need for them until now. We are taking a longer than normal car trip tomorrow. My dog isn't very good in the car. She doesn't get sick, but she gets very antsy and somewhat stressed. Sometimes we can calm her, usually we can't. We try to wear her out before the car trip, but she never stays worn out long enough (she's a min pin, LOL!). My question...does anyone know if this product is safe? It supposedly all natural. But are the specific ingredients okay for dogs? I can't find any reviews online?!? Any help would be greatly appreciated. You all always have a lot of knowledge on a wide array topics, so I thought I'd throw my question out and see if anyone had any thoughts. Thank you so much in advance!! Here's what the bottle/website says: Many pets are affected by factors such as separation from their owners, veterinary visits, training and professional competition, travel and even loud noises or thunderstorms. I would ask your vet if it's ok.
I had a mixed breed years ago, part brittany spaniel and part poodle. He was epileptic and was on phenobarbitol for it. He was terrified of storms and he would litterally try and climb the walls and have a seizure. I called my vet and asked if I could give him anything to calm him down during storms. He told me I could give him a child's strength gravol. I would ask your vet which would be better. Again as always ALL medication goes according to the weight of the animal. |

Interesting. I work in the natural health field and know this company well. They don't have the pet line of products here in Canada. I will be getting together with the Renew Life rep for my province next week for supper and I have to ask her if it is going to be launched in Canada as well.

We are not vets and therefore cannot comment on this product. Over-the-counter products are still drugs, "natural" or not. They are often expensive. Consumer beware of anything without vet's approval, may cause more damage than good. Drug interactions etc... These companies make promises and take your money.

Brittany, it sounds like another version of "Rescue Remedy". These are mainly herbal products with known calming effects.
My Mom used to drink a Valerian tea on a stressful day. Homeopathic products can be great, but as with anything herbal, it has medicinal properties. Use sparingly.

Also, supplements don't go through the same testing as a drug does. Because there is no regulation on supplements, some products don't contain what they claim on the bottle or the strength of the product may vary.
You should only buy supplements from companies that you trust, or that have had their products tested by independent labs to ensure that they contain what they are supposed to.
