Possible Ulcers?

I've been holding back from posting anything regarding the situation we are now in with our kitten Teeka as we weren't sure what was going to happen.

I posted a few days ago about how we thought she may have had worms. What happened was that by Thursday (we brought her home on Monday) she was starting to vomit almost regularly and wasn't eating.

We quickly brought her to an emergency vet clinic that the rescue we adopted her from reccomended. Teeka stayed there overnight, was put on fluids, checked for ulcers, dewormed, etc. Thursday night the vet called to give me an update telling me that she was eating/drinking on her own which was a great sign and that they couldn't detect any ulcers.
I asked if they thought the vomitting was due to the worms, however he didn't suspect so though he said it could've been possible.

I really wasn't informed much at all, and on Friday the clinic stopped calling me to update me and I was getting calls from the adoption coordinator from Oopsadazy instead, which kind of annoyed me. We ARE the owners, but whatever.
The adoption coordinator called around noon on Friday to tell me that Teeka was ready to go for pickup. And when I got to the emerg clinic the vet tech brought her out and said just to make sure she was eating/drinking on her own.

Since she's been home, two nights now, she really hasn't been eating, though she has been drinking a bit. She makes this weird grinding sound with her teeth after she tries to eat, then curls up in a little ball. I'm only attempting to feed her soft food, and I've tried to tempt her with different meats and fish and different consistancys. So far, Tuna interested her the most but she would mostly just lick up a bit of the juice. (And by 'lick up' I mean sniff, lick maybe twice, then give up.)

She also makes these odd coughing/hacking sounds sometimes and while she still purrs a lot, she barely meows since we got her back from the clinic.

I called the clinic this morning because Teeka now seems more tired than usual, which we chalked up to her vet visit which no doubt was stressful for her. The receptionist said she'd get the vet to call but that she suspects Teeka has ulcers deep down in her throat and stomach cavitity (which I was under the impression they had CHECKED for) and that she was surprised they hadn't sent any medications home with Teeka.

Because of this all we're concerned that Teeka needs to be in a different environment to pull herself through this. We have so much going on here at our home, plus a young daughter who wants to pick her up everytime we let Teeka out of her room - which is heartbreaking because we don't want Kiley to handle Teeka when she's clearly not feeling well.

Since Teeka came home however we've been keeping her seperated from everyone else in her little room, but she doesn't want to stay there. When she's not sleeping she stands at the doorway and meows, hoarsley, on the other side which then of course gets all the other animals going and my daughter determined to see Teeka.

I may be jumping to conclusions, but I really am just very sad and unsure of what steps to take to help Teeka pull through whatever is going on. I wish we had some kind of better set up where she could be alone in a quiet environment, but thats just not what we have here. And of course the vet hasn't called me back yet to let me know what I should do.

Thoughts?

**Oh and I just wanted to add that Teeka was already underweight when we brought her home, so the fact that she's barely eating anything at all is a huge concern.

I took Teeka back to the vet clinic tonight. Apparently they think that the entire litter she came from had ingested something before being rescued, which is why there were some kittens already dead when they arrived.

They don't know for sure what has happened but are doing more serious toxicity tests tonight, and she will most likely be there for a few days.

We are heartbroken.

I am sorry to hear and hope that Teeka is alright.

As far as stomach ulcers - they can be difficult to rule in or out. They don't show on radiographs. Endoscopy is the best method to definitively identify them. Often medication to treat the ulcers if given if it is suspected. Ulceration can be a secondary problem with many toxins as well. Medications like pepcid, sucralfate, etc... are often employed.

If there is a toxin, then the kidney and liver enzymes will likely be closely looked at. Looking for pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) could also be helpful. Also possibly abdominal ultrasound...

Fluid diuresis can be very helpful in flushing out toxins.

I wish Teeka a speedy recovery.

Thanks Dr.Lee. I was informed moments ago that Teeka is having her system flushed out as they are now suspecting toxins and she is on an IV. Other than that, I don't know much more, but they'll be keeping her there for a few days and syringe feeding her to ensure she gets food.

Is it normal for ulcers to cause a lack of appetite?

I feel like I'm at a loss as to what to think or do...I appreciate the well wishes and will keep everyone posted.

Ulcers will indeed cause a lack of appetite. Stomach ulceration can be painful and lead to nausea. While dogs often vomit with ulcerations, cats usually do not. Sometimes hiding behavior, slight decrease in activity or appetite is all that is seen. Sometimes the clinical signs are more dramatic.

Absolutely will cause a lack of appetite. When Puddles ingested paint thinner she developed ulcers and wouldn't even swallow, it was so painful.

She has made a full recovery (this happened when she was 1 and is now 13).

Sending your way.

Thankyou everyone for the information!!

Teeka is 'okay'. They noticed small lacerations on her throat, which probably has been the cause of her not eating. (They suspect something had burned her throat when ingested.) She was already so underweight when she came to us, this explains everything!

They flushed out her system yesterday and they decided against putting her on an IV as she has been drinking water, just not eating.

They said she won't be coming home today or tomorrow - maybe at the end of the week. Until then they will continue syringe feeding her.

I still have not been told what exactly is the cause of all of this - but the adoption coordinator thinks that the kittens were either given something or got into something before they were found last weekend.

Poor babies.

Please keep Teeka in your thoughts!!!

Hmmmm, have you gotten the results of the bloodwork? My vet 12 years ago was able to actually narrow down what the lab thought was the toxin Puddles had gotten into and sure enough when we searched the neighbours yard there was paint thinner sitting in a rolling pan.

Love4Himies, no one has yet called to let me know what they think Teeka and her littermates may have ingested, just that they toxins are the problem. Apparently one of the other kittens that had been adopted out was taken to the clinic yesterday after showing similiar signs. I'm sure they will be doing further tests today now that Teeka is under their care and hopefully getting her strength back. I'll let you know what I find out.

About half an hour ago I got into a little disagreement over the phone with the original adoption coordinator from this rescue over the fact that I only just found out the rescue decided to place the kittens so quickly which we found out from one of their rescue volunteers. They didn't even have time to get their first shots, which we had knowledge of when we adopted Teeka but it had been implied to us that the kittens had been in vet care and had been given a clean bill of health. My husband is starting to want to take this situation to the local papers, but I'm trying to hold him off. I really don't want to do that. It's a tough situation for everyone involved all around, including the other adoptive families that took the other remaining kittens, and I know the rescue is trying to do the right thing.

Thanks for telling me about your experience, it's comforting to know someone else has gone thru this same thing and it turned out fine!

Being in vet care is the best place so they can keep flushing out the kidneys and liver, I think your baby will be fine.

Puddles was at the vet for 5 days hooked up to and IV. Back in those days, blood tests were sent out to labs and my vet (best cat vet ever) sent it to a human lab in Calgary (we were in St Albert) so that could be how they were able to narrow it down to a list of items.

I am very surpised the rescue didn't notice that they were not eating .

I know. I think when they first found them the kittens were *trying* to eat. When we brought Teeka home on Monday she was nibbling at things, licking them, but in general not eating much. I wrongly assumed that she was a kitten, just little, that's why she wasn't eating a lot. She vomitted a few times when I first brought her home and that only increased until we took her in on Thursday to the vet for her first trip, at which they discharged her too quickly, after having her on an IV. They even told me when I picked her up that Teeka had ate for them and drank and that she seemed to be doing well, just to make sure she kept eating when I took her home.

It wasn't until last night after we dropped her off again for her second vet trip that we were told on her first visit, she would actually only dive at her food when they first gave it to her as if she was really hungry, but then after a few licks, she'd curl up in a ball...which is exactly what she had been doing all week with us, so if they had told me the details I could've insisted that she was 'not' better.

I don't think anyone really considered this to be very serious until I brought her back last night (and the other family brought their kitten in as well) and they realized the 'not eating' thing was more than just a change of environment.

I've called the clinic and am pacing the floors waiting to hear back what results they have on Teeka.

Poor Teeka. I really think she will come out of this just fine, but may have to be on a quality canned/raw diet if she develops permanent kidney damage. It was estimated that Puddles' permanent damage was 40% and like I mentioned she is now 13 and going strong. and some for Teeka.

Thankyou Growler and L4H!!

Teeka is doing better. They checked for ulcers - couldn't find anything. Tested for toxins, and found lead in both kittens - which leads them to believe that they most likely got into some kind of insecticide.

Thankfully they are sure both kittens will be fine, though Teeka will be going home with the Vet Tech so she can monitor her progress and continue syringe feeding her. I guess Teeka won't be released until she is at least eating wet food again on her own.

We'll miss her, but I'm just relieved that she will be okay!

Thanks for the update, Bailey. I know you are missing the tiny sweetie.

Are there any permanent side effects from the lead poison?

I hope not! No one has expressed any concern so far.

As far as I know the amount wasn't enough to do any permanent damage, it was more likely the alcohol content in whatever Teeka ingested that they believe has done more damage because of the lacerations in her throat keeping her from eating. They are fairly positive that most everything has been flushed from her system and since they syringe fed her yesterday she finally had her first poop this morning.

Poor little dear.

Yes, L4H, thanks for asking!! Teeka is doing better. She seems to be still having difficulty eating on her own, but she is doing fine with the syringe feeding. We were able to visit her for a little bit today, and she was fairly alert and a lot more active. She still wouldn't chase the little toys we had brought for her, but obviously that's to be expected. She's so thin! Poor baby.

Her sister isn't doing as well though. I felt really bad for that family - they have a young daughter like us, a bit older than mine, and she was really attached to her kitten. They have that kitten on fluids still and she's just hanging on. I really hope everything turns out well for them too.

Anyway, we're hoping to bring her home by the weekend.

That is good to hear, Bailey.

It took Puddles almost 6 months to be totally recovered, back to her normal activity level and her fur. She is a himalayan whose tail was magnificant, but when she was sick, she lost so much fur, it was pencil thin .

 That must've been so hard to see her like that!! Was she at the clinic for a long time too?

I'm told that Teeka will need to be fed from a syringe for quite some time until her throat heals. The big question will be how things go when I get her back home...if she'll feel 'okay' to eat with all the commotion of a busy household. Hopefully!

If you need help with the syringe feeding, this website has some good info: http://www.assistfeed.com/ There's a link at the bottom for the Feline Assisted Feeding group on Yahoo, which is an amazing source of support and guidance. But I'm crossing my fingers that Teeka will start eating enough on her own and you won't need to go there.

Yes, she was hospitalized for 5 days, she was not allowed to leave until her kidneys were concentrating well, and she was eating with no vomiting or diarrhea. She was hooked up to an IV for days, poor girl .

Thanks SCM, I've bookmarked that link! I also hope we don't have to worry too much about syringe feeding her. The vet sounded hesitant about sending her home while she was still feeding this way, but if she's doing well every other way they also don't want to keep her in the clinic.

Awwh, L4H, that must've been hard. It's so hard to see them sick...I'm so glad she recovered well!

Sorry SCM! I PM'd a few pple, didn't think to update this thread! DUH.

Teeka has been home for about six days now, and is doing great. She's put on a few pounds and is just now starting to venture out of her room. I do have to syringe feed her regularly, but the vet instructed us to start putting her dry food down in about another week.

I will post pictures soon. Thanks for asking!!

Great news Bailey for continued improvement

If I might suggest skipping the dry food all together and starting her on canned when the syringe feeding is done. http://www.catinfo.org/
