First raw food order
Hi all. I've been feeding raw for a bit over a month now and things are going great. I joined a raw food cooperative and am making my first order and wanted to get some opinions.
I am going with chicken backs as my main staple because of the cost. Adding beef hearts for a second meal to add muscle meat. Duck necks for some variety and chicken liver for organs. How does that sound? |

Hello LoveMyPresas .
Can you give us an example of how you'll feed these to your dogs eg quantity/ratios?

I haven't really set anything up yet really, I was thinking I could give them chicken backs in the AM, and then a beef heart in the evening. I don't have a set time for the liver since I just give it ocassionally and it would probably go with their AM meal. I could throw a duck neck in with the beef heart too. I've never even seen these pieces of meat so I have no idea!

I asked because chicken backs consist mainly of bone with very little meat. We feed approximately 10-15% bone, 5-10% organs, and the rest muscle meat. Too much bone will result in heavily constipated pooches.
Have you looked into the prices of whole chickens? Depending on the sizes of your dogs, it might be easier just feeding them 1/4 or 1/2 chickens with small amounts of chicken liver, heart, giblets. Variety is quite important as well. Check out the raw feeding forum here for lots of great examples.
