feline lukemia
hello everyone, I recently heard that feline lukemia is going around my neighbourhood, i know what it is, but would like some information as to how it is spread etc... All of my cats are indoor cats, but there has been a stray cat that comes around for the past few months and i will feed it, but never let it in the house, also I do not let my cats come in contact with it, but when i bring his dish in side, sometimes my cats will eat out of the same dish, this is a big no-no right? thanks everyone for any information you can provide.

FeLV is not spread by casual contact. The virus is very unstable and lives only a few seconds outside the body.
It is generally spread by deep bite wounds or mating - direct transference of body fluids from one cat to another. Cats eating out of the same dish, or using the same litterbox doesn't generally spread the disease. IF you want to bring the stray in, just take him and have him tested first. Intact males, with their fighting, are the usual victims of the illness. |
