Dog chasing tail

My dog is 8 years old and has been chasing her tail for a little over a year. Sometimes almost biting the tip off? She is a Westie. I have traken her to the vet several times for this problem. The Vet gives her anti-itch meds, Pretnisone, and antibotics. Nothing has helped. Now he suggests cutting the tip off. I do not want to do that. If anyone knows anything that would help, Please let me know?

Obsessive tail chasing can be a form of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) in dogs. If this is the case, the dog may need a combination of anti-anxiety meds and behavioral modification. You will want to find a veterinary behaviorist.

If the dog is chasing the tail because it hurts or is uncomfortable, you will have to take care of the physical problems first.
