Please Help, mass on foot

Hello all

I have a 7 yr old mini Aussie and about 4 months ago she got this growth on her foot. It enlarged with fluid (not solid) and then burst open and caused a draining tract. It drained for about 4 days and then went away. Then about 2 months later it did the same thing. Then with in a week it puffed up and drained again so I took her to the vets. The vet thought that it was a foreign body so they made her loopy and opened it up and cleaned it and took a biopsy. She didn’t think that it was anything series, but she said if it happened again that we should submit the biopsy. Well again this week it opened up so I submitted it and they said that the results should be back on Monday.

Since I’m in med school and my girlfriend is in vet school we have been doing a lot of research. What we found is that it may be a histocytoma, but we had a few questions that we can’t find the answer to and thought an expert may help us.

1. They did a fine needle biopsy when they cleaned it out and found nothing abnormal, if it’s a histocytoma cant you tell the irregular cells?

2. I cant find a picture anywhere on the net that looks like her wound, so I added one here can anyone tell me where I could find some good pictures of histocytomas that are open like hers?

3. Everywhere I look they say that you can remove it or it will go away. Well hers has been around for 4 months if it does come back as a histocytoma should I have it removed? If so is it like a tumor that they cut away most of the muscle and skin around it?

4. Lastly, if it’s not that what else could it be?

I’m sorry it’s so long but please help me. Bella and I would be so grateful. If you want to email me my email is robertwinchell@yahoo.com.

Thank you so much all and have a wonderful day

Robert

Hi Robert,

I'm not a Vet, not an expert...

but has anyone looked at this as if it is a paplloma over a cyst? On a visual, and based on your description that's what I would guess.

Thanks for the response. No havent thought of that one but I will suggest it to the doctor. What makes you think that it may be that, if I may ask?

Thank you again
Robert

Well, like I said it's just a guess. but...

One, fibrous histiocytomas aren't all that common in dogs and yup, you should (and I say "should" cautiously because I'm going to give you something to read if you haven't read it already) have found at the very least, histiocytic cells. Two, you had a clear aspiration with repeated-after- draining swelling though I have to admit the repeat drains bother me). Three, while the pictures on my ol' Bess ~ that would be my PC, not my dog) don't come over all that well, the "nubby carpet" look I see in your pix looks like "warts" I have known and loved before (that would be a joke).

This article about cutaneous histiocytomas is worth a read.. http://www.merckvetmanual.com/mvm/in...m/bc/72232.htm

Welcome to the forum by-the-by and do let us know what's up with your pup ~ we love a good edu-me-cation around here!
