Trekking Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania

I went to Africa . . . . .

Mt. Kilimanjaro is in Tanzania, on the equator, and is an active volcano standing 19,340 feet.

Below, the obligatory fist-pumping summit photo. After 7.5 hours clawing only six kilometres but gaining 4,000 feet, the ultimate moment. In front is Zeinaib, a spunky 50 year-old Egyptian living in Salt Lake City who probably had the best day of us all, processing far more from a single gulp of air than I was. Left to right is Edward, assistant guide, Kevin from LA who also had a good day, Kaen, our head guide with his 157th summit, myself and Peter, from Denver. Tony, from Boston, would also summit in our group about half an hour later. At this altitude, we're missing 50% of the oxygen found at sea level.

Rather than post a whole string of photo's and dialogue here, I'll refer anyone interested in this trip to this link, where you will find it all:

A few landscape pics below . . . . again, all photos and narrative are at www.goldentales.ca/guestlog.htm

Below, porters freighting at about 18,000 feet, Mt. Mawenzi in the background.

Below, climbing the Baranco Wall, waterfall in the valley below. Not a good idea to fall here.

Below, sunset at Barafu Camp, 15,300 feet, the night before summit day. In the evening, the lights of Moshi stood out on the plain 10,000 feet below.

Lots more at www.goldentales.ca/guestlog.htm

I checked out the pics, they're fantastic. Love the ones where you appear to be up in the clouds.

Thank you Rick for sharing those pictures! Amazing is all I can say. And the story that goes with them is equally amazing. The stamina needed for that climb is something I will never have. It blows me away.
Seeing the kids who will probably never see the inside of a school reminds us how fortunate we truly are to live in Canada. Very poignant.
You may not have been feeling up to par at the peak but you still managed to take some terrific pics to share with us! Thanks again!!

Stunning photos - every one!! Something to always remember - and perhaps do it all again!! I loved those pics. I envy people who can do that - I haven't a head for hill walking never mind trekking up that mountain!! Great narrative as well, felt as though I was there!!

Loved all the other pics as well - ' specially the "kilties"!! Don't see any here and I live in Scotland, unless I go to Edinburgh castle and see the soldiers!!

Are you going to write a book about your journies? You should. Brilliant photographs as well. To see the mist on those clouds and be in the mist was really something, I bet.

Take care and I did enjoy this thread.

FYI, if anyone is interested, the link has been updated a fair bit since I originally posted, some new pictures and additional narrative.

Also, my first youtube posting at this link:

http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=2Gx7BxDkfL8

It was our last morning on the mountain, porters and guides, including some of our own, were singing and dancing a farewell to a neighbouring group at Mweke Camp. It's 8 in the morning. Not a great angle but . . . . they're pretty good.
