Exclamation HELP Puddles coughing?????

I am just going to hand over my paycheck to my vet this month!

Last night as I was going to bed Puddles started coughing/sneezing/hairball sounds. It lasted until about midnight (3hours) on and off.

Has anybody ever had this in their cat?? She was woken up by Jasper and she started coughing again about 4AM, nothing this morning. She did this a couple of times on Thurs, but only for a second so I thought it was a furball. She is not eating or playing as much, but of course with this heat that is normal for her anyway.

I am taking this video to the vet, no doubt she won't cough for him

Mmmmm, no answer. I know TT was doing that the other day. Kind of a huffing? I phoned the vet and they seemed to think I was overreacting. Not the vet, his receptionist. He hasn't done it since.
Good Luck at the vets! Hopefully it's just a hairball that doesn't want to come up.
I know about handing over the pay cheque. Just did that.

Thats what I thought on Thurs night too, but last night it went on and on. She was walking while she was doing this too, not in the crouched down position.

It seems almost like she's trying to swallow something, kinda a gagging cough that starts in her throat. Maybe a hairball? Do you have any hairball remedy stuff (or maybe some butter or olive oil would work) to see if that helps? Or some grass she can chew on? Poor Puddles. What a cutie, by the way. Hope whatever it is gets resolved soon.

No I don't, sugarcatmom, that is what my co worker, who is a cat lover and has three, thought, it seems like she is trying to cough something up.

I am currently at work and will call the vet office when it opens. I really want her lungs and breathing check, just in case she picked up something.

She is a huge grass eater, sometimes I think she is part bunny and has access to grass every day.

That is not stupid at all, it could be, it almost sounds like her diaphram or her stomach muscles are contracting. Puddles gets hiccups when she gets into her heavy purring. Could it be her fighting the hiccups, trying to breath??

Looking at the video, that's the first thing I thought. If she's never had hiccups before maybe she's fighting it, not sure what's happening. Or maybe it's a combination of her trying to get out a hairball and hiccups

Bunduk had an Upper respiratory when he was a kitten and would do exactly that. I think it doesnt sound "normal" cuz theres also mucous in there..so it sounds like a weird cough...I dont know if that makes any sense.

I have heard that sound though, so dont worry. It may just be a hairball but coupled with sneezing (runny eyes?) it may be she has a little cold. Dont worry love4himmies, honestly im 100% sure its nothing serious. A little cold or a little hairball or maybe the hiccups as ancient said

No sneezing, runny nose or eyes and being a Himalayan her eyes will run at the slightest irritation.

I'm sure she's okay. But it's always good to take them in just to be sure. I'm the same way. Any little thing that I think sounds odd I'm running to the vet

Six cats and I haven't run into that noise yet....curious to see what it turns out to be. Fagan gets the hiccups, but I only usually notice his belly contracting, never any noise.

for Puddles and you and your wallet!

Well the vet is not sure. He thought the coughs were similar to heart failure or asthma.

Not asthma, it would go away without meds. Her lungs are clear.

Could be heart failure, but he thought the coughs lasted too long and her heart sounds fine, but if it continues we will persue further testing on her heart. Her blood work is just too good.

There are two tiny white ulcers on her tongue, looked viral to him, but she has no temp. He tried to look down her throat for further ulcers but didn't see any.

He thinks it may be a furball that won't come out. She has been given some goey stuff to take twice a day and he gave her a 3 day shot of antibiotics just incase it is something brewing and we nip it in the bud.

They love the video idea, first time ever. Of course no coughs while at the vet.

Here is some pretty in-depth reading on coughing in cats, if you're up for it: http://www.felineasthma.org/moore.htm

Coughing isn't typically a sign of heart problems in cats (more-so for dogs):

Quote:
Why do cats cough?

Coughing results from stimulation of the cough receptors that are located within the larynx, trachea, and bronchial tree. In cats, coughing is usually a sign of disease affecting the lower respiratory tract (LRT), particularly the larger airways. It can also be associated with upper respiratory tract (URT) disease, but is rarely associated with disease of the lung parenchyma, heart or pleural space.

In cats, most coughing is caused by irritation or inflammation of the trachea or bronchial tree. This can result from the presence of foreign material, inhaled liquids or gases, be caused with infectious agents, allergic or hypersensitivity reactions or, occasionally, with neoplastic processes. Since there are no cough receptors in the peripheral lung tissue, disease affecting just the periphery of the lungs will not cause coughing, that is, until it extends into the upper airways.

Cats, unlike dogs, rarely cough in association with heart disease, or with disease affecting the mediastinum. This may result from a number of different factors, including the finding that the trachea and main-stem bronchi in the cat appear to resist compression that results in coughing much more commonly in dogs
Do you have heartworm in your area? Supposedly that can also cause coughing in some cats. Fingers crossed that it's just a hairball issue.

Well, at least he gave her a shot in case she's got an infection or something. Hopefully she'll cough up a hairball and that will have been the cause of her cough.

the antibiotics or the hairball stuff will kick this whatever very quick

The oral ulcers can be a sign of an upper respiratory infection, which doesn't neccessarily always come w/runny eyes, sneezing etc

Yay! Hopefully the hairball was the problem and she'll be okay.

Oksana is the one who has the most issues. She's always coughing and making this funny noise, but I've yet to see a hairball anywhere. I give her Laxatone, and every now and then I see hairy poops

Hope it was just the furball that was the cause of the coughing and she has no further episodes.
