Pet medication dosage!
Last Wednesday my vet gave me Clavamox for one of my cats. A urinary tract infection. He said 1 drop twice a day. I asked the girl at his checkout and she said 1 drop twice a day. Clavamox is a liquid in an eydropper. Today I look at the eyedropper and see that it is marked in .25 ml increments. then I look at the package and it sais to give 1ml (one droppfull orally twice a day) so does that mean I should have been giving a full eyedropper twice a day? I have only been giving her one drop not a full dropper!
He also gave me Mometamax ear dropps (7.5). All that perscription sais is apply in ears once a day. He did show me how to apply it. this thing has a long tube on it. I am not sure if I have been applying this stuff correctly .He showed me to stick it in and then rub her ears for at least two minutes after. On the internet i looked it up but it sais 2 to 4 drops a day. But today I well cats ears have different holes in them and I am not sure that I been putting this stuff into the right hole ( or down deep enough) or even if I been putting enough in! ****, ****, ****! |

Hazmat - please contact your vet to get specific instructions again. Get him or one of his nurses to write down the instructions for you. It would be easier for you to remember that way. I can't see 1 drop doing anything to help a cat. Maybe it was 1 eyedropper or 1 drop for the ear drops but I am not going to play vet and tell you. Please contact your vet.

I agree with contacting your vet for clarity but I will try to answer the question in general terms which may help you understand what your vet told you.
Clavamox. Average dosing 1-3lbs: 0.25mls by mouth twice daily 2-5.5lbs: 0.5mls by mouth twice daily 4 - 11lbs: 1mls by mouth twice daily. Note - other than perhaps mice, it would be unlikely at a dose of one drop. Typically the Clavamox boxes come with eye droppers which are labeled at 0.25 to 1mls. Mometomax This is a once a day dosing. It is a general dose and can range. For small dogs the dose is 4 drops into the affected ears every 24 hours. For most cats 2-4 drops. Please note that these are general ranges and could be widely different from patient to patient so please contact your vet before changing dosage. This information is provided as a guideline. Good luck

14+ Of course I will call them first thing in the morning. I was just wondering if anyone else had experiance with the same meds. She has had the same issue for over a month I am sure it is not an emergency. and the other 2 cats are fine so it is not contageouse whatever her problem is, at least I think
9 lb cat lol i been giving the cat 1 drop should have been a full eyedropper guess ill just get new perscriptions and start over, thanks ps the mometomax thing it is hard to tell how many drops she gets but I am pretty sure I have not been putting them deep enough, rather i been putting them on the top of her ear not inside. was hard to tell which hole in her ear was the main hole that leads down there. untill I actually tried sticking the tube down in and then i can't tell how many drops goes in. It is a catch 22. Last edited by Hazmat; April 21st, 2008 at 06:51 PM. |

Since we as vets deal with this medication maybe ten times a day sometimes there is some miscommunication. One drop and one dropper's worth sound very, very similar. Luckily this is a very safe medication and overdosage problems are unusual. I have had some specialist recommend more than triple standard dosing. The human equivalent is Augmentin.

Frankly I'd rather give a pill. I can shove a pill down and it only takes a second and I can't screw up the dosage. Although I can see why some people would rather give a liquid since my cats seem to take liquids better. But the cats or dogs sort of forget about it after 20 seconsd anyways

Clavamox comes as a pill form (4 sizes). The 62.5mg size is usually sufficient for an average sized cat. The pills are fairly small. Your vet will have this medication.
