Buddy went to the bridge this afternoon

We had to take our little Buddy to the vet this afternoon...he was approx 16. He was actually my mom's dog but since the pet food recall, I have been responsible for making decisions regarding his food, toys etc. I also was the one who had to do all the yucky/hard jobs that my mom just couldn't do (nails, grooming, emergency med problems, once had to pull a tooth he broke in the late evening with my vet on the phone helping me through it, give him his medication etc) So even though he was "mom's dog" he was kind of mine too. Mom made the appointment and cancelled the appointment a few times but he was ready to go this morning and she knew it. So I took her to the vet and held him in my arms (mom couldn't) while the vet did what needed to be done.

Feels weird coming home to only the 2 dogs but I know in my heart he was met at the bridge by his buddy Max (our border collie who went 4 years ago) and Mikala (our great dane we lost 3 years ago) and he happy and whole again.

So sorry for your family's loss, and the other pets missing their brother
Sixteen years is a long time to care for a pet - he looks well cared for and loved

I'm glad you could be there with him, bj601. I know how hard that is, but it's a marvelous gift to give. He passed in your arms, surrounded by your love. My condolences to you and your Mom.

Buddy

Thanks everyone. Today has been hard, I stopped at the store and was picking up some dog toys and automatically picked up 3. Almost lost it in the store. He was loved, we enjoyed him for almost 15 years. He was another "cast off" that ended up at our house. He was on route to the pound when my mom said she would take him from an aunt and uncle.

I almost didn't go, wasn't sure I could stay calm but I was with him through all his health problems and even though he was more my mom's dog, it was me he always seemed to gravitate to to "fix him" when something was bothering him. So I felt I owed it to him to be with him at the end. Plus I couldn't put my mom through it alone (love my dad but he is pretty useless in these circumstances lol). It was quick and the vet let me keep him in my arms instead of putting him on the table, plus they scheduled us on their lunch hour when there was no other patients. I love my vet!!!!! I apologized in advance for whatever Casey's behavior will be when he goes in on the 24th for his neuter lol.
