My turn. Roses and Poppies

The garden is heavy with scent. The Russian Olive, the peonies and the Roses all in bloom at the same time makes the garden smell like a perfume factory. It's absolute heaven.
Here's some Rose pics first. Poppies follow. After the storms this evening, the peonies will be flattened and the poppies will be finished.

So pretty! And that orange rose is a stunner! No peony pictures?

I can hear thunder now. My peonies are just getting ready to bloom--I'm hoping they manage to pop a few flowers before they get flattened

Wow, what beautiful roses. I am on dial up so it took quite a while for the pictures to come through. But, it was worth the wait.

I would love to have roses but they don't seem to do well in my garden. Have you any suggestions on what I could do in order to have roses half as nice as yours.

I understand what you say about the smell in the yard. Just lost the lilacs and then came the peonies. They are really big this year. Haven't checked but they are probably flattened with all the rain

Any advice you could give me on the roses would be appreciated.

Once again, thank you for the lovely pictures

Sylvie, roses are really not difficult to grow, probably easier than many other plants.
You just have to start with a nice healthy plant from the nursery.
I've never bought those roses packed in plastic,I believe it's always better to buy a potted rose,a little more expensive, but worth it.
All they really need is water and sunshine and if aphids appear, have them removed.
I have about 15 rose-bushes my pink one is more than 30 yrs old.

I concur. Roses aren't really difficult. Just need some really good stock to start with. I basically plant mine and let 'em go. Pretty much care free. I love them!!

I stick to antique and English roses. They tend to be hardier and highly scented. The English varieties need a year or two before their stems are strong enough to hold up those huge blooms, but after that they're fine.
I agree with Chico2. Stay away from the cheap bagged roses unless you can buy them in March before they break dormancy. Once they've started to grow in that bag, they're going to be hard to keep alive. Potted roses that look strong and healthy are what you want to start with.

clm,I don't know the name of any of my roses, except for the white one I bought a couple of years ago,I think it was called Kennedy something
The one older bush I have, right by my side-door is deep red and has a wonderful
smell, maybe you can tell what it is,I have a pic here somewhere from last year..
It's the first one, then the Kennedy Rose and another..
I forgot to say,dead-heading is also very important for new growth, many people don't and it looks awful.

I believe your white one would be John F. Kennedy Chico2. I've grown that rose in the past. It's a real looker.
The red one might be Crysler Imperial. Highly scented red hybrid tea.
I just love seeing everyone's roses. Keep the pics coming folks.

Roses are my absolute favourite plants in the world.

Your roses are just beautiful, clm.

Have you heard of the Morden series of roses that were developed in Manitoba? Very hardy and beautiful. DH brought me back a Winnipeg Parks from Holes Green Houses in St Albert, AB last week (he had fun getting through security on the plane ). I also have a Morden Blush.

Yes I have heard of the Morden roses. They're readily available here. My only beef with them is that they're not scented enough to make it into my collection. For people who just want pretty and very hardy roses they're an excellent choice.

You are right, they are not as scented as others. They do bloom profusely and continuously and don't need any winter protection.

Have you heard of Stanwell Perpetual? That is an Old English Rose (Scotish actually) that is hardy and smells wonderful!

Great roses, I have roses but I dont know awhole lot of anything about them. One thing I find is that something likes to eat the leaves a lot. Sometimes it's little holes in the leaves,, or maybe a side chewed out of the leaf. Not sure what it is that gets at mine. Love looking at the flower pictures people post. Isn't nature wonderful.. Your pictures have made me want to grab my camera and go take pictures of my roses too :-)

Love the Roses, tried to grow them for a couple of years but gave up. I do have miniature roses that bloom away all summer, this year something is going on with them though. The leaves are all drying out I'm thinking that it might be aphids but cannot see any. Ideas folks Yesterday my Poppies popped, just love them.

Thank you for your advice. I did have one that I thought would do well and then a varmint burrowed under the roots and exposed some of the roots to the winter weather, but it hung in and is slowly coming back. I buy my roses from the garden centres, not in plastic bags. So I am O.K. that way.

I am going back to the garden centre and see what they have that are hardy, using the names I read on this thread. Thanks everyone.

Maybe in a couple of years I will be able to post my roses. Yours are lovely.

Lovely flower pics! Oh I adore roses - I wish the ones in my garden would do better, but somehow it seems that I haven't got a green thumb.
I'll not blame it on me, but on my homecountry - in the uk flowers can't grow that well because of the weather Nah, you're right, all my fault! I should spend more time in the garden! I'll probably try again next year.
