Barf Diet

I talked to a lady today who does the barf diet. But what I forgot to ask is.......does she uses supplements?

Is there anyone who can answer that. And one more thing do you change over quick or slowly?

Carina ohhh Carina lol!

She was telling about a supplement/conktion she makes with some veggies apple cider vinegar and kelp and alfalfa (sp?) She said she mostly uses chicken the odd hamburger. Not to be gross but my dad has a bunch of deer meat I wonder if you can use that?
I have a bit of kibble left but I really want to try the barf diet. I'm just nervous I will screw up. Going to read more lol!

Isn't Carina's book all about the BARF diet??? Send her an email!!

My grandparents fed their dog deer meat all the time, he lived to be about 19!!! I was sooo young back then, I really wish I had paid more attention to his diet for the dog.....I could have learned so much!!

Deer meat is good but check with your local fish & game people about the possible presence of chronic wasting disease in deer.

Yes I wrote a book, it's available all over the place.
Here's my site, you can order it from here:
http://www.raw-dogs.com/default.htm
Or amazon.com, or Borders, etc etc.
If you go to the "links" page on my site, the "New Jersey Boxer Top 50 questions" is an excellent FAQ. Also the Bowchow link has a ton of info.

Supplements are not absolutely necessary, and no two experts agree on how much, how often, what type, etc. Many people overdo it, IMHO.

I've changed a number of dogs with zero problems. The best way is "cold turkey." Keep it very simple at first - like chicken backs & some boneless meat (you don't want TOO much bone in the diet.)
I don't like turkey bones, pretty much everything else I feed. Some people add probiotics & digestive enzymes (from any health food store) for the first few weeks to help with digestion & such, but I've never done this.

Carina, do you know whether there's information/statistics that the BARF/raw food diet does increase life expectancy for dogs/cats?

A man I met on a walk with a GSD that was 18 yrs old!
When the dog was 10 he switched to a raw food diet and supplements.

18yrs in a GSD is heaven sent!!

Sadie has been getting 80% non dog food diet for the past week and her health has improved dramatically. No more loose stools or diarrhea.

She recovered quickly from the lepto vaccine reaction once I switched her diet. Mind you not everything I give her is raw. But fuit, veggies are.

I've done some research which indicates that ground eggshells is a great supplement.

BUT does anyone have any clue how to grind egg shells to a powder consistency????

I wish there was a non biased study! There isn't, though.

Eggshells are calcium...you can grind them easily in a coffee grinder. But you DON'T want to add calcium to a commercial diet; overfeeding calcium can cause ofrworsen joint problems of all kinds especially in growing dogs...(there HAVE been a number of studies on this.)

People do use eggshells & various other kinds of calcium (usually bonemeal, a much better source) in cooked diets for dogs b/c those just use boneless meat.

Eggs are a great additive to any diet, though.

Carina don't be upset with me......I don't think I can feed the barf diet. I an give the raw meat and kibble? But to do the others I'm super afraid I will screw up. The more I read the more I worry

Hi Amaruq...Is it you with the liver Dal? If so, us too! We feed Pele a barf diet since he was about 6 months old and he turned 3 on the 24 of Feb. We occasionally sprinkle kelp powder over his food. His meals consist of veggies that have been put into a food processor. Nothing lettuce like though or peppers. Carrots, celery, broc (beware! Fart inducing), parsley, cukes etc...About 1 to 1.5 lbs per day of protien. If you do have a Dal make sure you've looked into the purine levels of meats that you will feed. High level of purine in a diet for Dals will bring on the kidney problems that they are known for (if your Dal comes from lines that have shown this) Chicken is good and mackerel, and raw eggs, no shells for pretty much the same reasons you have to wash your veggies, but egg shells are worse. Yogurt, olive oil, and flax seed oil or any omega 3 fatty acid polyunsaturated oil.
Pele is very healthy, weight aprox 50 lbs, has smooth silky fur, and beautiful teeth! We are firm believers that the Barf diet is the ultimate! If you do have a Dal and want a barf diet for dals let me know because my girlfriend (Pele's mom) belongs to a chat group re: this so I'll post it if you want!

Yep Liz the Liver spot!

We know nothing about Liz's background. She was in the pound and thats all we know.
We do know she has allergies.
I changed them to a turkey and barley kibble (pro plan) and no ear infections (knock on wood).
As i was reading more and more into the Barf diet....it started scaring me more and more...watch for this and watch for that. If you don't do this right it will cause this. I don't know if the diet would be for me cause I would constantly be worried But I have no problem feeding the raw meat. Thats why I was thinking of the mix diet.

amaruq, you can do a mixed diet, no problem. There's a whole section on that on the bowchow link.

how much veggies & meat should be given per pounds of a dog anyways?

Chocolate's around 68lbs & Honey's 46lbs

now, I feed them about an avg apple each or kalarep (sp) a day w/o reducing their dry food which is 4 cups a day/each.

along with dry dog bones.

I'm very much overfeeding them to ensure they bulk up... and they have, so it's going to be time to switch to something different very soon...

Sorry, just saw wAggies post...I can't say with your doggies...We saw our vet maybe 6-8 times within his first and second year...We monitored quantities mostly with protiens and purines and like I said, Pele is a 50.lbs dog, a dal which is similar to pointers and def under 2 lbs is enough for Pele...We discussed the other portions and "experimented" slightly and agreed that because veggies hold alot of water...it's pretty obvious how much is too much. We feed abaout a cup and a bit with a half cup of yogurt (good bacteria)...Low carbs...Pele loves baked sweet potatoes, we give 2-3 meals a week. We discussed carbs and yes, in moderation, but mostly not necessary. Canines were;t bred to cook and feed themselves rice, potatoes, etc and corn is very high in sugars, so long as there is a proper protein intake the carbs are like treat...MMMM french fries...
