Fish question
Can 2 female betas co-exist together without aggression or should 2 be of the opposite sex?

I was alway told that you cannot put 2 betas together (regardless of sex).
My daughter had a beta (named Sushii) and we stood a mirror on the outside of the fish bowl. Sushi would then puff and flare up at the other beta (her reflection) which was so pretty and no harm done. I found this link which may be helpful. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/in...1145352AALCA5q Good luck t.pettet

males and females together will kill each other.
two females will kill each other. two males will kill each other. 3 females in a well decorated 10g or larger tank will do just fine although if one is too aggressive, removing her for a few days, redecorating and adding her back shoudl take care of the problem. -ash

Thanks for the info. but how then do they mate if they're so aggressive with each other?

2 females can be done.. I actually kept two females (siblings, though) in a 2.5 gallon tank, they got on fine. I definitely don't suggest it though.
Only females can be kept together safely, and they develop an alpha beta delta sort of pack. The mating.. Well, its weird. I guess you could say that the females like it rough. I remember my couple chased each other and the female got very beaten up....However, on day three, they did it. A lot of things come into play when mating. Pressure changes due to rain or storms often get them into the mood, as does a new water change and warmer water. It also depends on the fish's personality. Basically, as soon as the female acts submissive, as long as the male isn't a fool, they'll do it. |
