the dog left behind
As many of you know My Dog Shelby had to be put down,I forgot to mention my Border collie x.I think he's no I know he's depressed without her. I've tried everything to get him to come around but am not suceeding. He refuses to go out back unless someone comes with him, I can almost understand that but to watch this is heart breaking. Does anyone have any ideas? I was thinking of getting another Siberian but am not sure.

I wouldn't suggest trying to replace your puppy you lost just yet. If you're not ready, he's probably not either. Just give him lots of extra attention and make him feel special. Maybe take him to see other dogs he gets along with or to a dog park so he can make friends. then, when you're ready, look into another pup. I am really sorry for your loss and I hope you get some advice that will help make it easier on your little guy left behind....

Aww, poor boy misses his friend I think getting another dog would definetly help you both to move on (although i know Shelby would never be forgotten, or replaced) when my bird smokey died (about a year ago) i got another bird about a month later and it helped me alot to stop thinking about him ALL THE TIME!! (but then again, birds are alot different then dogs..) Im So sorry for your lose, and best of luck with your other dog!!

Loneliness
Alot of people fail to realize that their PET's do get Lonely.
Sib have you been taking him for walks to meet with his other doggie friends? i dont know much about "DOG" Loneliness but i am pretty sure it's the same as cat Loneliness.. anyways the idea is for you to keep his mind off things.. like getting him out more and or playing more with him, until you do take the plunge of getting another animal.. he will miss his old friend and show it but having a new friend may bring back the joy of life he once exerted..

Are you ready for another dog? You could bring the bc to a shelter and see if that perks her up when she meets another dog. Or perhaps you have a friend with a dog who wouldn't mind bringing her dog over to see if that would perk her up. I don't know how long its been, but maybe she just needs time.
Oops didn't see that thread. It's going to take time for her to heal. Do you have a dog psychiatrist, maybe that might help her. Last edited by Cinnabear; September 24th, 2004 at 01:37 AM. Reason: oops didn't see the thread before this |

Heeler has good advice there Sib. After Lady's death, Lucky got so 'old', didn't want to do anything, no walks, nothing could make her happy. We visited people with dogs, she didn't want to have anything to do with them. Almost 2 years later we got Stella..Lucky hated her, but now, the 2 of them cannot be separated, and I see the puppy coming out of Lucky. Time heals all wounds. Deb
P.S. Talk to your border collie, tell him what happened, dogs are smart people and you have one of the smartest!

I saw this happen when our old dog Mya died, she was 14 and the other dog, Foxy, was her pup - so they had never been apart. Even though my dog (the rottie) was still in the house and had been there for 8 months... Foxy just went crazy. We had done everything to try and help her though it... Mya had to be PTS from congestive heart failure - so Foxy didn't see her die, but we took the body home to bury her and we let Foxy inspect the body, thinking it would help her deal... it didn't hurt anything, but it didn't seem to help. For at least 6 months after Mya died, Foxy could not be taken off the property... she would go frantic. She could also not be left in the house alone for any amount of time, even if my dog was with her. At one point she actually jumped through a plate glass window in the main door... Foxy was an 9 yr old dog herself at this point - so that was quite a feat. She spend a lot of time "looking" for Mya and often slept outside on Mya's grave.... which was in Mya's regular sun bathing spot. We think she went frantic in the house alone because she was afraid Mya would come back and she would miss her - I guess with us in the house too she could ask to go out.
Foxy never accepted Rosie after that - although Rosie would follow her around and worship her whenever I came home to visit, Foxy was always aggressive with her and Rosie would just roll over. Mom did get another dog about 6 months after Mya died.... and Foxy finally started to get better... even though Millie was really rough with her, Foxy loved her. Foxy had cancer and a back leg that didn't work and Millie was always jumping on her to play and knocked her down frequently - when Rosie was around she would always tackle Millie if she got too rough... lol... but Foxy still liked Millie better... poor Rosie. When I had to put Kody down, I was unsure how Rosie would react, but Rosie was actually happier without poor Kody, he always played rough with her and she had bad hips - so I think she was relieved. We had talked about maybe getting another dog to keep Rosie company if she was too lonely, but she didn't seem to be. We actually got a cat a few months later and that seems to please Rosie. They are all different. A new dog may help, but it may make your BC resentful of the new dog too. A new dog, puppy or older, would require a lot of time to help him/her settle in and that time is probably best spent on your BC right now. give it some time for you both to heal. Keep him busy and I'm sure you will discover the best next step along the way. Sorry for your loss and good luck. |
