Peg the Puppy . . . .

Story at MSNBC.com this morning on a young dog getting an artificial leg . . .

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10048748/

Some of you may be familiar with our Polly, a cat who lost both her back feet as a result of abuse in small town pet store.

We actually had Polly in front of artificial limb specialists in Calgary for a time, people who seemed to relish an interesting challenge, but alas, Polly was not too interested in co-operating and we eventually dropped the project.

Polly, however, has adapted to her disability and gets around fine on her leg stumpies, including forays outside with constant supervision.

Polly, below, has no back feet but has caught a few mice on her forays outside!!

How amazing - they never give up. Have her stumps toughened up with use? Does she throw her weight forward to protect them?

Polly drags herself up onto stools and beds with her front feet and claws . . . . she'll jump down by taking most of the weight on her front paws, then letting her stumpies hit the floor.

We have some throw rugs on our marble floor to give her "islands' of traction to go to.

As she got more mobile and used to her condition, her stumps began to open up with cuts and it took us a long time and a lot of vet ingenuity and invention to find the right combination of bandage coverings that would stay on to allow them to heal.

That was recently accomplished and she's off to the races again.

As I said, she's caught at least two mice . . . . although Abby took one away from her and ate it and the other one got away when she kept playing with it.
