infected skin tag
i noticed yesterday that kiila was licking her leg quite a bit. so i checked it out and found that she has a skin tag (which has been there for quite some time and has been vet checked) that she has been licking and appears infected.
the skin tag itself is blackish in colour (almost looks like a sliver). the infected part is pinkish and swollen. the vet is closed for the holidays for a few days, so i am wondering what to do about it in the meantime. i have been cleaning it with salt solution water. i'd like to wrap it in gauze while i am not home to prevent her from licking at it - is that okay? the skin tag itself isnt that big, so i dont think they will remove it, but perhaps prescribe antibiotics. but until then, i want to keep it clean and prevent her from irritating it further. any suggestions?? |

We've never had luck with gauze wraps--the dogs just chew them off and eat them Then you have to worry about the possible effects on the intestine.
If you have a veterinary topical antibiotic ointment handy, that might help a bit--most of them are designed so that the meds are absorbed after about 5 minutes, so keep her from licking for 5 or 10 minutes after you put it on, then wipe it clean if you want to. But if you won't be with her 24/7, probably the only way to keep her from licking it is a cone

Ok, so I have this old dog with many skin tags..(.Ok so it is me..LOL ) the damn things turn black and silver and red and look infected, dry up and fall off. Just put a little polysporin on it. If it looks like it is getting worse, off to the vet you go..

polysporin is safe for dogs? i didnt think it would be a good idea to use that as its in a spot that she can easily lick - thats why i opted for the saline water.

well...the infected pimple looking thing looks much better as i have been cleaning it lots. however, the skin tag is now gone.
i wonder if that is why she had been licking it incessantly - it was falling off and bothering her? |

wow seems to be a bad winter for our babies skin, we're having problems with our bayley too.. if the spot seems to be itchy and bothering her, disolve 2 aspirins in a tbsp of rubbing alcohol, then in another cup put in hot water and a tea bag,,then pour the aspirin mix in and let it cool. once its cool use a cotton ball and dab the mixture on the hot spot. It helps with the itching and healing.

i will go buy some aspirin tomorrow - all i have is advil. i posted a pic in my other post asking if it was a hot spot - never had them before or seen them in real life. do you think that is what it is? should i keep cleaning it and wait it out, or should i make a vet appointment for antibiotics? |

i can't really tell from the photo, any hot spots i've ever seen are usually damp looking. If it doesn't look infected i would keep cleaning it and keep an eye on it. I have rolls of vet wrap for when my guys get booboo's. You can usually get them for about 4 dollars a roll at your vets.
