Home remedies?

Hello all...

My dog Lily (lab/shepard mix) has been really scratching at her ear. Now my DH has been cleaning all the animals ears for ear mites...of which I think the kitty my daughter brought home had...he's cleaning all the cats and lily...but yesterday lily let out a very loud yelp of pain when I touched her ear. the inside is red and I was reading in my Home Remedies book for amimals of some things to do or use. Does anyone else have anything they could help me with to get rid of these mites? I'd appreciate any suggestions anyone has to offer. Thank You so very much

I use Revolution , you use it on the back of there necks, it takes care of ear mites and fleas. You can get it from a vet, or online. Since i deal with alot of feral cats, they dont stand still for ear cleanings for very long, its much easier to put a few drops on the back of the neck. But if its red, it could be infected, for that you will have to go to the vet for antibiotics or it could turn serious. :sad:

Labs have floppy ears, which is prime breeding ground for yeast and bacteria. It may not be mites. Mites leave more blackish material (and you can see them moving around with a magnifying glass), whereas yeast stinks and has more of a reddish gunk.

If you're cleaning the ears, don't stick stuff in the ear any further than you can see with the naked eye. Don't want to risk pushing more gunk down further into the ear canal.

If the ears are super inflamed and very painful as you say, you should visit the vet and get some good medicine to help clear that up. Dog needs its ears checked to make sure the ear drum isn't punctured/perforated.

But I really wouldn't suggest home remedies at this time, as they will only increase the pain your pet is suffering. Home remedies would not be very good if something was wrong with the ear drum.

I know, I've been there. One of my dogs was as a rescue and she had horrible ear yeasty infection. She had to go on some steroids for a while to reduce the inflammation, I had to clean her ears twice a day and apply a vet prescription cream for her ears. The medication was only $25 I think and I bought a giant bottle of ear cleaner from the vet also for $20.

My black lab use to get quite a few infections in his ear from yeast. He eventually lost his hearing even thru proper care.

I would get the dog to the vet and have it examined and get some proper medicine. You don't want to risk his hearing or have him being in pain longer than he has too.

I've used ivomec on ear mites. Not sure there is a home remedy for them.
