Cocker Spaniel Mutt Only Eats Crap

My inlaws' cocker spaniel mutt ONLY eats no name dog food which is full of fillers. The first ingredient is corn!

She's old and stubborn. They adopted her from the humane society and were told she only eats this type of food.

Anything they can do?

We tried giving her a bag of Purina One with lamb (it was free and looked to be a lot better than what she was eating) but she just went hungry for 2 days.

maybe if she eats 2 cups of the junk food and add 1/4 cup of quality food? and then as she accepts that slowly decrease teh crap and increase the quality food?

otherwise does the dog like table scraps of any sort?? I dont like feeding dogs table scraps but if she will eat them maybe if you mix them in with a few meals till she accepts the quality food?

id persoanlly go mroe for my first suggestion and use my last suggestion as absolutly last option, im not fond of giving dogs table foods

My old dobie hated his purina food. Have you tried something tastier? Even Eukanuba Lamb and Rice is better tasting (thought it's still not the best food or from the best company...) Otherwise, I doubt any doggy can pass up Solid Gold Wolf King. Maybe ask for samples from a dog food store.

How old? If's she is old like in "ancient" terms, why bother changing now? The change may upset an older dog, be satisfied she is happy.

If she is 12 or under I would try and change her food a little at a time like suggested.

My .02 cents worth.

You know, I was looking at that Solid Gold food. Comes vacuum sealed in a gold or silver bag right? Well the puppy large breed formula has no glucosamine in it. Thats what kept me from buying it for my Mal.

The WOlf king is in a gold bag. Just so you know, there isn't enough glucosamine in any food to actually make a difference...

So what would you recommend to supplement his diet? Glucosamine pills? Other foods?

I would ask a vet for pills. I have heard that human pills are a different form of glucosamine that is not absorbed as well (I don't know if it is true). Personally, I don't give glucosamine. There are other things to do to prevent arthritis-- like being careful about the development stages, giving the dog a soft place to sleep, keeping their weight down when they are older and consistent exercise..
