Putting Dog in Kennel for first time - advice?
We are going out of town for 3 days this month, and will be boarding our dog in a kennel. What sort of things do I need to look for in choosing a kennel, and what can I do to make the experience easiest on our girl? She still suffers from mild seperation anxiety, so I'd like to do what I can to help her. Also, we feed her a raw diet - the kennel shouldn't have a problem accomodating this, should they?
TIA!

Can you board her at your vets?
What you can do is call around to the boarding kennels.Ask questions like how often are the dogs let out for exercise?Do the dogs socialize with each other? And let them know about the raw diet you have her on.And tell them she has a bit of seperation anxiety. Also go and check the kennels out. I have never kenneled my guys.I usually take them.If we can't,I usually take them to my mother-in-laws.

Check out the kennels. Make sure that they are clean, and that the dogs don't look bored. Good luck!

I know this isn't exactly what you were asking but have you considered having someone come to your house?
We have had good luck paying a teenager in our neighbourhood that we know well to petsit when we are away and this usually works out to be cheaper too. We have also traded watching each other's dogs for the day when our neighbours are gone as well.

Dee: That's a wonderful idea, but we are new to our area, and don't know anyone yet that could help us out.
Mona: We usually take Luci with us when we travel, but this time we are flying, and will be staying in a condo with family that have small children and no pets. We don't have any family in the city we live in that could watch her for us.

Ask your vet for a referral to a really good kennel. I did this, and was very happy with it.
I visited the kennel first. Try that. The personnel or owner should be happy to show you all around and explain the care they will give your dog. If they won't let you see where the dogs are kept, or are evasive, walk away. My kennel has clients fill out a form telling them the dog's personality, likes and dislikes, etc, and offers the option of leash walks every day. A good kennel should have no problem with your raw diet. |
