Cat can't jump as usual
Our cat normally jumps up on the counter to sit and watch the world go by, but today noticed he tried to jump up on the counter and had difficulty. He tried twice, couldn't make it the first time, had difficulty the second time; later he just stared at the counter contemplating and walked on without trying. He is also sleeping much more these days. Is there some type of inner ear imbalance like humans or some other illness? He still eats the same.

How old is the cat?
When was the last time it was at the vet? Any recent infections?

Response
He's 1 1/2 years old; had his annual vet visit (and shots) in November with no problems. No recent infections or anything out of the ordinary.

He doesn't need shots if he's an inside cat; if he goes outside every three years is sufficient...( thought I'd throw that in. )
Could be an ear infection; could be LOTS of things - I just checked here: http://www.vetinfo4cats.com/cmotion.html The last two answers there could well relate to your cat's situation....hope you find that useful.

Imbalance
Site was very useful, thank you. Hopefully it'll not be a major event in his life, he's going to the vet first thing in the morning. We like a calm cat, but he's tooooo calm(!).. even the puppy is worried about him, she sits next to him and just watches him sleep.

diagnosis
Vet says our cat has a bad case of upper respiratory infection; he had a fever of 104 which wouldn't go down all day (even after medication) so he is spending the nite at the vet's with constant attention and monitoring. However, vet still can't figure out the motion/balance dilemma so more tests will be run tomorrow.

Oh I hope he's OK! Did you ask if an ear infection could cause the imbalance, like it can with humans?
Best wishes for your cat, let us know how he is.

The cat is back!! Once the vet got his temperature down, put him on antibiotics and ran the tests to check for ear infection (which wasn't found), he's now home and making up for lost time. His jumping is back in spades. Vet said it was unusual for a cat to have still kept his appetite with the high fever and upper respiratory infection, but like we've always suspected, our number one pet is not "usual". Thanks for your words.

Well no matter what, I'm glad he's back to being a jumping fool!
Merry Christmas.
