Dog swimming spots in Montreal?
Hello everyone,
I'm wondering if anyone could recommend a place I could take my dog swimming. I have never taken him swimming; we adopted him in February. He's a year old now, and part lab, so I'm wondering if he loves water Looking for a quiet stretch of water that starts shallow, maybe somewhere on the lakeshore? We're in the west end, and don't mind driving a bit, but the closer the better! Thanks!!! |

I don't have any suggestions, but I'm in the west end of Montreal and I second this plea! I have a part-lab as well, and she loves water, but the dane in her makes her too big to swim comfortably in a bathtub or anything of that sort
I'd love to find a swimming spot where dogs are welcome! |

I take Leo to the little ponds in Westmount park, but he's only short so it doesn't take deep water to get him to swim haha. I'm sure you could also let a dog swim in Park Angrignon.

no no nooo not there, its still water!!! a breeding ground for lepto and all sorts of nasties!!! Lepto is nothing to fool around with, a slow agonizing death....please don't let a dog swim there. GG took her dogs there for years and would never ever let them go into the water, never let a dog or child even swim in still water where there is wildlife nearby...please...even the river is better. You all have no idea.

Thanks for the great water quality website Melinda, that's really useful.
I am a little afraid of the current in the river, but I guess lots of people bring their dogs in. |

I can't help you unfortunately, and don't know if this is a good idea or not, but if you are letting the dog swim in a river with a current could you put him in a harness with a long line leash so you could pull him back if needed?? I must say though there could be other safety implications here, like snags and such.

There is a lovely spot at the corner of Churchill and Lakeshore Road in Baie D'Urfe (right beside the Baie D'Urfe Yacht Club, I think it's called Bertold Park). It's a dog friendly (off-leash) open space beside the water and there's a nice little inlet that isn't very deep.
It does open up to a large body of water and the area isn't fenced in so you have to have good control over your dog but it's a beautiful spot and a we've usually found a lot of friendly dogs for Huntley to play with when we visit. |
