Odd tail issue
I noticed my cat's tail is gunky and messed up as I've groomed it. So I shaved it and took a picture of it. I have no idea what it is, but it clearly bothers him.
Anyone have any idea what's going on with him? |

Have you changed anything in his surroundings? Washed bedding in a new detergent, changed his diet?
I had to stop using carpet fresh cleaners as they irritated all my animals skin. In any event, your best bet would be to get some solid answers from your vet. Good luck labowner and please keep us posted.

Haven't changed anything recently.
I've noticed this in the past and it seems to have cleared up on its own, but just noticed it again. ATM I can't afford a vet trip(not cheap and none have payment plans.) |

It's "stud tail".
Hi labowner, what your cat has is called "stud tail", often more common and noticeable in longhaired cats, and more so in whole cats than neuters. If your cat has not been neutered, please get this done as soon as possible. It's overactive sebaceous glands. I had a spay girl that had "feline acne" on her chin off and on for most of her 17 yrs. It's not contagious, but if it's irritated by a lot of scratching or biting it can get infected. Clipping of hair over the affected area can be beneficial, as well as combing the hair to remove debris and excessive oil accumulation, and cleansing the area with degreasing shampoos twice daily can help minimize the problem. Medicated antiseborrheic shampoo, which contain benzoyl peroxide or sulfur-salicylic acid are also beneficial. Since you will likely have to clean cat frequently, make sure you give him treats afterwards, so he doesn't come to hate being cleaned and fussed with. Good luck!
Here's a link that will give you more info. http://www.fabcats.org/owners/skin/acne.html Just be thankful it isn't at the other end...."dirty face"! Last edited by catlover2; March 17th, 2010 at 08:13 AM. Reason: Additonal info added |
