Sam the BMD - graphic photos

My name is Sam. I am an approximately one year old Bernese Mountain Dog who was found as a stray and in a terrible state. I am very nice and gentle, and I have done nothing to deserve this. How could anyone neglect me this bad ?

Probably is, yes. He's losing his fur all over his body, his skin is oozing, his eyes are swollen, he is just skin and bones.

I can't believe he is still hanging on to life.

Sure. It's just gonna take a while and a lot of care. The saddest thing is that we would want to just lie next to him and give him a hug, but we can't touch him. He's hurting from everywhere - he can't even stand a collar.

He is beautiful. If it is definitely mange, do you think it's curable?

Mange is curable but very painful and takes a long time. Poor baby he did not deserve this. You are an angel Inverness. Give him a kiss on the nose for me,

If you find a mange-free spot on his body, please give him a little kiss for me. Keep us updated on his progress....

Iverness: I had a physical reaction to your photos, I am having a difficult time even typing this response.

Being a BMD lover and having 2 who are rescues, please let me know if there is something I can do to help even if it is to put to word out to some of my fellow Berner owners.

Those photos are very upsetting to say the least.

He was found as a stray. I'm pretty sure Sam decided he had had enough of being tied in a backyard somewhere and just broke his chain and ran away.

Sam is not doing very well. We went back to the vet today and had some Vanectyl prescribed to try and stop the itching. Sam is just a huge oozing, bleeding sore at the moment. He is so uncomfortable he doesn't eat, he just lies down and sleeps - or tries to. There has been no improvement of his condition, it even seems to be getting worse. I'll wait and see if the Vanectyl kicks in tomorrow, and if not, we'll go back to the vet again. I'm worried for the big guy.

Inverness how is Sam doing I cannot stop thinking about this poor boy? I have posted a link below describing the 3 types of mange for anyone interested. I was told there is a natural cure for it but that may depend on which type he has.

Ok, I am at work and in tears over this. People make me sick!
Please let us know how poor Sam is doing. I will pray for him.

Berner's are my fav dog, looking at that face just made me cry. They are such beautiful dogs and seem to never complain, they just love you all the same. I find they have a noble personality, even my last dog Travis who was a cross was such a gentle giant ( I still miss him terribly). One day I hope to rescue a BMD, but not until I can live in the country and have lots of room for him to roam. Give Sam a kiss for me, I hope he will find happiness in his life. Keep us updated on how he does. from me and Tucker.

Sam had shown major improvements with high dosages of cortisone. His skin was healing and he was definitely more comfortable. Unfortunately, while trying to lower the dosage, we have reverted to what he was like when he arrived. His skin problem flaired up immediately. We are back with the higher dosage and are going to the vet tomorrow for a reassesment.

One good thing though: he does eat well now, providing I serve him home-cooked meals...
