Re-evaluating Daphne.

OK, this *just* happened and it is so weird I had to
post.
For those that don't know, Daphne is a poorly-wired
shelter Rottweiler. Very sweet, hyper, anxious. Dumb
as a box of rocks.
I thought.
OK, so two weeks ago I broke down and got a TV
(Haven't often lived with one, never watched much.)
And Daphne is just entranced. She licks the screen,
follows movement, especially if there's animals on
there. Sound on or off, doesn't matter. Runs around
behind it to find the animals. But she'll watch
anything moving. I had to turn it off because she just
lay in front of it and was drooling and getting
obsessed.
She just figured out how to turn it on. I am not
joking. Four times in the last 15 minutes, I go turn
it off and walk out of the room. It comes on again,
and there she is staring at the screen. Repeat.
Repeat. Fourth time I hid around the corner and
watched....and she bumped the power button with her
nose then sat down to watch!!!
I just put a dining room chair in front of it and she
is now circling the chair trying to get to the power
button again.
I take it back. Daphne is NOT as dumb as I thought.
I am now going to take her for a long walk in the snowy woods
because she deserves it.

Amazing how we have these preconceived ideas about our pets and then they go and prove us wrong. She is not dumb just doesn't like to let you or anyone how smart she really is then they would expect more from her. Aim low avoid dissapointment

Right! ARe you sure Daphne isn't part cat? People think they're dumb too, but they can learn at an amazing rate when when what they are learning is to please themselves!

Phoebe has been enthralled by the Teletubbies lately. Good thing all our TVs are mounted up out of the reach of children, or she might be up all night watching! Daphne sure is a smart girl! Had you fooled, didn't she?!

She did have me fooled! I had to put a dining room chair in front of the TV.

Just got back from a walk, I took her to a river & some woods and really let her blast around off leash for a good hour. She's crashed out now, she was getting extra-neurotic because I hadn't walked her properly in a couple of days.
Cooper cut the pad of his foot on Sunday, so I didn't want to put his nose out of joint by leaving him home for walks. It's only a little bitty cut, too! It must hurt more than it looks like, he's a pretty stoic dog but he is still favouring it.

Never under estimate the intelligence of your dog. Years ago I had a poodle that turned on the radio everytime we left for work. (Clock radio in the bedroom, push button)..and turned it off when she heard our cars. I found out after almost three years because I came home early one day while she was snoozing to tunes....and surprised her! She quickly hit the "off" button & pretended to be asleep. Caught her many times afterwards too. We sat her down, tried to explain..many,many times, it's okay to do this. Still, she snuck around behind our backs, listening to the radio.

Ciara loves the tv too, used to be all the time but now it's only certain things that spikes her interest.
Daphne is a smart cookie...even with Ciara, I found it takes time to really get to know them...I believe the language barrier has a lot to do with it. We are different species after all....

While I'm on the computer, like now...it's her turn for the TV. If she ever uses the remote, I may have to step in. She has already taught herslf to open the refrigerator. My bad..I taught her to "show me" what she wants...

She went too far and gets her own cheese. Now the frig is locked.

Welcome to my world Carina, Daphne will fit in also...

I have a red headed, black & tan stepchild! And lovin' every minute!

Smartie Pants

Okay ... my GSD Emma can open the fridge and open doors inside the house ... my cat Milo can flush the toilet and can turn on the TV. Milo also figured out, last week, how to unlatch the door (hook and eye) to the room in which I have isolated a sick cat so he can eat all the food and crash out in his favourite chair. I thought that I was going nuts every time I found him in that room. I watched him one day and saw climb up on the bookcase, play with the latch until the hook came out of the eye, then hop down and use his paw to pry open the door. This is the same cat who learned how to climb up on the fridge ( ) to get at the dog cookies. He is very generous though: he throws some down for the dogs.

Egg says that she knew that Daphne was smart all along. She wants Cooper to know that she misses him even though she has made a new dog buddy and seems to have taken over this house as if she has always been here

Lisa.

Cooper says he was honored to have the opportunity to teach Egg the Ways Of Dog.
It sounds like your crew will teach Egg a few new tricks!

Great smart-doggie stories
Having had only cats for the past 25yrs,I think their intelligence is vastly underrated.....I KNOW my cats are very smart, have learned all kinds of things and they certainly know how to use their cute-ness,instead of opening fridges, they make us,their slaves do it for them..the same for the TV,they'll show us when they want to watch
When mom spends too much time on Pets.ca..covering the monitor with their bodies, they are telling me..oops,I've been spending 2 hours here, where did the time go
