Kirkland Signature Ultra Premium Chicken and Rice

This is my first post- I have read some very good reviews on Costcos dog food. I can see by the talk in the forum that there are very smart people on the topic of food.
Does anybody out there have experience with this brand?

I have never used it. It is better than the regular supermarket brands but not as good as the premium/holistic brands like Canidae, Innova, Orijen, Natural Balance, etc.

Yes I have use kirkland senior chicken and rice, Nakita was on it at the time. it worked for her she digested it well and her pooh was in good form just her coat was not as shinny as what i would of liked.

It's better than most of the Nutro formulas, but it's not the best out there.The man baddies in it are the beet pulp, egg product, fishmeal (what kind of fish?), menadione sodium bisulfate (vitamin K3- banned for human consumption).

It irks me to no end that petfood companies sprinkle meaningless words such as "ultra" and "premium" all over their funky designer bags... while the content barely passes as "food", at best. Thumbs down!

It's great if you're on a limited budget because it's got much better ingredients than "store brands" like Purina, Pedigree, etc, and is even less expensive than them. No, it's not the best . . . but it's pretty good. Chicken is the first ingredient, etc. My cats are on the cat brand of Kirkland's and have lovely, shiny coats and lots of energy.

Does their cat one still have by-products as #1 and corn as #2?

Their original formula might but I think the new one is chicken.

The first ingredient is chicken and I believe the second is chicken meal.

Chicken, chicken meal, whole grain brown rice, ground white rice, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), natural chicken flavor, flaxseed, potassium chloride, salt, calcium sulfate, calcuim carbonate, methionine, choline chloride, taurine, dried chicory root, zinc proteinate, vitamin E supplement, niacin, manganese proteinate, copper proteinate, zinc sulfate, manganese sulfate, copper sulfate, thiamine mononitrae, vitamin A supplement, biotin, potassium iodide, calcium pantothenate, riboflavin, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), vitamin B12 supplement, mangaous oxide, sodium selenite, vitamin D supplement, folic acid.

So no corn!

My pamphlet I got 2 Christmasses ago said chicken by-product meal, ground yellow corn, brewer's rice, chicken fat, corn gluten meal, etc etc... So you can see why I was concerned.

Oh but keep an eye on the recall lists for it though... The recalled Natural Balance was made by Diamond as is the Costco Kirkland brand.

Oh no, I didn't know Natural Balance was made by Diamond! Man, is this getting stupid or what? We shouldn't have to put this much thought into a pet food just to get one that won't poison our pets.

they also have omega 3 and 6, and the mature brand also has glucosamine and chondroitin which I use for my ol'boy

I used to feed my dog's & cat's Kirkland dog & cat food and they all did pretty well on it. That was until my Great Dane started having growth issues when I had to reconsider my food. So I started doing my research and ran across a dog food rating website, search Google for "Dog Food Analysis" and it's the 1st site to pop up. It's one of the better places to look for information on dog foods and their ingredients. I have since switched my dogs to 1/2 Innova & 1/2 California Natural which was in an attempt to keep protein levels down for my Dane. But I have noticed since switching that my Aussie's skin quality & general coat condition is better and they poop A LOT less. But there is a cost difference between the two. If you are looking for a more "Budget" food I would recommend the Kirkland brand, it's definitely a lot better than many of the foods on the market.

crzycpgrl, have you done any research on calcium? I'm wondering because newer info seems to say high protein is fine, but high calcium (over 1%) is what causes growth issues.
