Using your cat's litter when your cat is lost

Hi members!

My neighbor lost her cat for 3 days. I don't know all the details but apparently she got the idea to sprinkle some of the remaining cat litter outdoors and create a trail of litter leading back to her house.

Apparently within 45 minutes of doing this the cat was home.

Aside from the environmental/health factor of sprinkling used litter in public, i thought this idea was ingenious.

Has anyone ever heard of this and what do y'all think of this technique?

thx! Marko

The use of the litter box left out has been mentioned tons of times here. I would think that would do the same thing as sprinkling it. The whole idea is to have something that smells strongly of them to draw them out of hiding. Seeing as the butt is one of the things cats use to recognize each other that makes total sense.

I missed it in the other forums. (To be honest I usually check in on general, on topic and off topic. It's a luxurious day for me when I get to play for longer than that and then I'll hang out in photography. Love the pics !!! )

I don't have a kitty but my brother has two very loved indoor cats. There are signs on every door about being careful not to let the cats out but one of them is extremely slippery and can zip out when she wants to. She was gone for an agonizing 3 days one time. I'm going to tell my brother and SIL about this when I talk to them tomorrow !

Funny. I never go into the individual forums unless I am creating a thread. I just use "Today's Posts" at the top of the page. That way I get the latest threads and can check out all of the different forums.

Yup gotta read our stickies more often - I knew that litterbox trick too, but had forgotten about it. Doh!

Anyway, even if this is repeated stuff a few more people are reading it and that's good.

Best prevention for lost cats though........keep them indoors always (or under your direct supervision...that's my thoughts on the matter anyway)

This is a pet peeve of mine. My neighbor has a gorgeous kitty who is out all the time. Last week I called to tell her that there was a big fox in the yard and every time we even think that there's the possibility that maybe a bear or coyote might have, almost, could have been in the neighborhood we tell her but they don't seem to care. Same goes for the people up the street who leave their little 10 pound dog outside all day because they have an electric fence and she doesn't leave the property. That fence won't keep predators out !! Poor baby is sooo lonely. If we go by with the dogs she's pathetic for the attention we give her. We've even thought about asking them if we can have her.
