Cat enjoys dogs crate

I have been reading up on crates and have brought the dogs crate upstairs into my room so she has a place to sleep other then in the closet in an equipment bag (her choice not mine). She is not forced in the crate, we leave the door open so she can lounge when she pleases. Well the cat is agressive and was adopted into our house before our dog (she is passive). I woke up last night to the dog trying to get into the closet because the cat would not get out of her crate. Any ideas on how to keep the cat out of the dogs crate. Should I put the cats crate/carrying box in the room as well? He hates being in his own crate because he has bad memories associated with it (going to the vet/groomers) so im not sure he would use it but I will do that tonight, any other ideas?
Thanks
Sarah

This may help.

You can try rubbing orange peel on the cage door.

Cats dislike the smell.
Just hope the dog doesn't.
