basements not a toilet

My wife and I rescued a mix breed dog from the pound 8 moinths ago. He really is a great dog if it wasn't for the fact he thinks he can urinate in the basement. He does'nt do this any where else in the house and he usually is grood at telling us he needs to go outside. Someone please give us some pointers, we want him to be welcome any where in the house.

Is he in the basement alone or with someone? Any ideas of the age of the dog?

Bster is 6 years old. The problem occurs at times when he's alone or with us and it does'nt matter if were at home or not. Any help is appreciated.

Keep your eye on him every time he goes down there and never let him down there without someone to watch him. When he goes to pee, say no and then rush him outside to finish peeing outside. Once there, give him lots of praise and treats. You have to catch him in the act otherwise he won't know its wrong, even if you try to tell him after the fact.

Also, make sure you clean the spot where he is going with really strong cleaning supplies, otherwise the scent will remain and he will continue to mark his spot and you will just end up cleaning after him over and over.

His former owners may have allowed him to pee in the basement, or he may really think the basement is not part of the house. When I first got my dog, she thought it was okay to pee on my deck. A couple of "No"s and she realized she could not.

Keep him out of the basement when you cannot watch him. Take him down on a leash, and if he shows the slightest inclination to pee, say "NO" and give the leash a little tug. Immediately take him outside and when he pees, praise him greatly.

Use can use a product like "Nature's Miracle" to get the smell out.
