Pregnant and venting!!
Hi all. I haven't been around in a few weeks. I've been spending my time sleeping and eating! My husband and I found out we are pregnant. We are SO excited and are 8.5 weeks along right now. We are due September 27.
On to my vent... lol I joined a message board for Mom's expecting in Sept 09. It's through the book "What to expect...". They have all sorts of boards, one for each month expecting, toddler boards, etc. Everything you can imagine. Anyways. I'm getting really frustrated on my Sept board!!! There have been 4 separate posts so far about people looking for a new home for their dog on craiglist, kijiji, etc because there is a baby on the way!!! I know, so outrageous. I'm just floored that people are getting rid of their animals like old shoes. It's breaking my heart. I've posted my thoughts to them but most people seem to be agreeing with re-homing the dogs! They are worried about dog fur, and drooling and the dog attacking the baby. Dog Dammit it's making me angry!! One lady is even going to rehome her dog because he jumps up on her stomach. You're 8 weeks!!! The baby is not even at the surface of your stomach yet! You have time to train, you ! My Koda is diabetic, he's on a strict feeding schedule and I have to give him insulin 2x a day. But that's my JOB as his owner. They all have "normal" dogs without extra hassles like me, and you don't see me packing Koda's suitcase and sending him on his way. Gosh, this whole thing really irks me Ugh, I'm sorry for my harsh words, but these people are unbelievable! I wish I could rescue all of these beautiful dogs from these irresponsible people. |

I hear your frustration. Some people will use ANY excuse possible to shed their responsibilities. My favourite (or most ridiculous excuse) was 'the cat's hair does not match my couch'. I am not joking! I know that others have probably heard others or the same as well.
Best practice is to stay out of those medias - they can and do play havic on us animal lovers. Oh my gosh - almost forgot: CONGRATS!!!!!!!! |

Sigh. My neighbour got a beigish cat to match her furniture in the basement. A few months later she gave the cat way because she got the cat while her husband went away on a busness trip and didnt discuss with him (he didnt want one). She just got a new kitten a few days ago, her husband being on a trip again Oh and she doesnt believe in spaying/neutering but does believe in declawing to save said beige furniture. UMM ok.
So ya, some people have serious issues. Congrats on your pregnancy though. There is a thread here (im not sure if you read it/participated) for pregnant moms...maybe try and post there instead of the site you are on? Just so you dont get too stressed out with those

Maybe you should also let them know that some studies have been done that indicate that babies whose mothers are around animals on a daily basis throughout the pregnancy (as in living with them) have children with less allergies and asthma. Ditto for children raised with animals from infancy. And children raised with pets have a greater sense of compassion and sympathy (or empathy?). I think a big part of whats going wrong with the world today, and why children born now are so the 'me' generation is because from the moment of conception the whole world revolves around them. Parents who do that are not doing their children or the rest of the world any good. Children need to feel special and loved, sure... but some parents let them become pint sized dictators! (as evident on those shows where the nannies come to the rescue)

Thanks all!
I totally agree about the "me" generation. It kinda reminds me of only child syndrome but worse! lol Plus, animal lovers are so much happier!! |

What concerns me,is that people think, their sweet family-dog will suddenly become a wild beast, once a baby is born.
In the news-paper this morning, about people giving up there"pets",there are pets that are just pets, for a while, then there are those who's animals are family-members,like most of us,who would never dream of dumping our animals. Fate's owners next door introduced Fate to the new baby right away(to my surprise),the same with the kitty. Although they have practically a disinfected house, nobody is even allowed to wear perfume in the house, they allowed the dog and cat near the baby. I believe you will have a healthier baby, without allergies if you let the baby adjust to life, including pets. Life is not disinfected, babies better get used to it right from the start and will suffer less as he/she grows up.IMO

I agree chico.
What ever happened to FAMILY pets. When I was growing up everyone had a dog or a cat. It 'completed' the family! Now I get these terrible looks when people find out I have a large dog AND we're going to have a baby. Sheesh! |

People will do anything to shed responsibility. It's sad that they are using having a baby as an excuse.
I agree with BenMax, in that maybe you should stay away from those places. It's only going to stress you out. Maybe you can find a support group for pregnant women who have pets and aren't giving them up. There has to be a place out there like that. And congratulations.

it is unreal, the funny thing was, when I was pg, I was searching for a dog, and a breeder. What is the best time in my eyes to get one, when you are on mat leave, so you can train and house break while the baby sleeps. HMMMM worked really well for me
