I just read this thread now and I am so happy that Sam has now found such a wonderful home. He is looking really good now thanks to you, BMD, and his excellent vet care.

Glad to hear his new family will be giving updates and pics of "our" Sam.

Christmas Eve Party

Sam left about 15 minutes ago for his new life. He will be having a special party this evening and meet his new parents friends. Pretty nice homecoming for him. It was bittersweet to say Goodbye to Sam. He will be terribly missed but his life will be wonderful so that's what matters. Have a wonderful new life Sam, you deserve it so much big guy!

It's sad and hard to let go of Sam, since he's been a special part of our lives on pets.ca With that being said, I am thrilled that Sam is healthy and he will have a fanastic life with his new family.

BMDLuver, at the end of the day, what was wrong with Sam? It seemed like those treatment baths really helped him out along with the special food.

Aw, I was wondering if Sam had left for his new home yet. So glad he got a great Christmas present. Poor boy went through so much, and it's amazing that he seemed to never lose his trust of people. Good luck, Sam!

Yey for Sam! Sorry, BMD. I suspect you wanted more time with him, even if he has a dream family.

At the end of it all, Sam had Demodex mange, combined with a full blown yeast infection and a bacterial fungus. Plus a horrendous case of fleas that were not easy to treat. The combination of baths, ketacozanole, benedryl and advantage multi are what ended up getting him to where he is now coupled with some SS food then Wellness Fish and Potato. He still has some facial swelling but about another 2 weeks and that should be gone as well. He had an advantage multi treatment yesterday and I saw a difference in his nose area in 24hours. Effective stuff against Demodex mange for sure.

Coming Back

Sam will be returning tomorrow evening. The family has decided that they made the decision too soon to have another special needs dog. Sam has a lump under his chin, downwards of his throat. It was checked today and has some puss in it so is most likely an infection from something he injested. He will be starting antibiotics for it and we will have dr. Plasse give it a second look when he returns. It's just too similar to Molly for them to cope with yet. Guess he just wasn't ready to leave us yet. I'll keep everyone posted on what the lump is etc..

BMD,so sorry to hear that:sad: poor Sam
I just wish the new owner would have thought of that before taking Sam,with his background he probably will have healthproblems, hopefully none too serious
Will he be coming to your house?? I hope so

Thanks everyone. Yep, the big lug will be hanging here. Two of my fosters will be available as of Jan 2, so Sam will remain with us and any new Berners will go to them. Don't want to confuse the guy as he's pretty used to us. It will all work itself out and I don't think the lump is anything but perhaps a twig or a burr as the silly monkey got in to some burrs the day before he left and was merrily trying to chew them out when I caught him and removed them the hard way.... visualize Sam pinned to the floor with my knee and a comb slowly pulling them out.

Talk about a quick turnaround! Poor Sam, at least he's coming back to a familiar place, with the best care and vets he knows. Still, not pleasant to be wound up, then let down, although I'm sure it ain't your first time.
Good luck with the lump.

I'm sure that Sam didn't mind coming back "home" ...at least it was a short enough spell that he didn't get too attached to his new family. How does Sam get along with other dogs?

Best wishes for a good outcome with the lump. He's such a trooper!

Well, the silly guy arrived back last night. He's his usual goofy self and was pretty excited to see all of us. I think he just assumes he went on a little adventure through the states, lol. His lump has reduced in size 4 times with only 2 days of antibiotics so it most likely is a burr he munched on. We'll keep a close eye on it and continue with the course of antibiotics.

He loves other dogs and has been having a blast this morning as we've had more snow overnight. He's a bit cheeky with the cats but not in a harmful way, he just nudges them around the house.
