Question Bananas?

I'm a bad mommy!

I never feed Lady from the table. I don't give her much in the way of scraps. (except left over chicken breast) The one thing I do share with her is bananas. She will do anything for a bite. Every night before bed...I sit on top of the covers and she sits in front of me and bite for bite we share a banana.

Never even thought to check if they are safe??

Recipe

Here's a recipe for oatmeal banana dog biscuits if you're interested. I have been meaning to try it for a while but haven't gotten around to it, let me know how they turn out if you decide to make some!

veg. shortening
3-4 LG eggs
1/3 canola or corn oil
1/3 C honey
1/3 C blackstrap molasses
1 C skim milk
3 ripe mashed bananas
3 C whole wheat flour
3-6 C uncooked oatmeal, depending on texture preferences

Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
Lightly grease a 10x15" baking sheet with veg. shortening
Put eggs, oil, honey, molasses, milk, and mashed bananas in a bowl, and mix with a hand blender.

Add flour and oatmeal and mix till it is the consistency of cake mix.

Spread batter in prepared pan, and be sure to let dogs lick the spoon and bowl! lol

Bake 1 hour, turn off oven, and let treats sit till oven cools.
Turn out onto counter and using a pizza cutter or knife, cut into whatever shapes you want. Cover and refrigerate or freeze up to 2 months.

Banana's are SWEET to dogs, so ofcourse they love to gobble them down.
However, just as in any sweet, watch the amount you are giving her.
We are MUCH bigger than our animals, so what looks like a small amount to us, it looks HUGE to them, and affects them as such.

I was advised by my vet NOT to give banana's because of how much sugar they have.

Blaze loves bananas I give them to him nothing wrong with that even with the sugar... we are talking one banana or part of one not a whole bunch. Anything is fine if given small amount.

Thanks folks, I was worried there for a second.

I absolutely love Lady's face as she smacks her lips while she chews them. Her eyes get all big as I grab the banana off the counter. She's such a baby!

Kayla, thanks for the recipe! I am going to make them tomorrow night. I'll let you know what she thinks of them. One thing though, do you think I could substitute the Canola for Olive oil?

I don't know if you're not supposed to but I always substitute corn oil for olive because I can TASTE the olives and it's pretty gross.

I agree with Prin on being able to taste the olive oil, but then dogs eat garbage so I doubt a little olive oil in their cookies makes a difference to them

My girls love bananas and I've looked up on it, I haven't read anywhere that they're not safe. Some Wellness treats have banana in them too (Wellbar Yogurt, Apples, and Bananas), so I"m sure they're fine.

However, when I was looking up foods that are safe for rabbits, I found out that bananas can be addicting to rabbits, as well as Mediterranean Tortoises . I couldn't find why though...

Frozen Bananas

Ginger and Hobo LOVE bananas. I have one for breakfast every day and I swear they can hear me rip it off the bunch because wherever they are they come flying. In the summer I take the ones that are too ripe for me and slice them and freeze them and when we come in from a walk or just from outside they get a frozen banana treat...like a doggy popsicle. The Vet knows all this and thinks it is just fine...in moderation, of course!
