Apple trees - zone 3
Good day gardeners....as the snow continues to fall, I'm trying to figure out what type of apple trees to plant on our property. The zone is between 3 & 4 so I'm looking for zone 3 hardiness. The soil is clay based and there is excellent sun exposure. The other problem I would have is WIND....and lots of it!
Any suggestions???

Appele trees are beautiful, and although I don't know the answer to your question, I just wanted to let you know of some of the draw backs to owning apple trees ( I used to own them) They attract Bear (if you have bears in your area) Deer, racoons, porcupines, bees, wasps, and rabbits love eating the bark in winter, which will kill the tree! I love wildlife and love to see it up close, but wouldn't want a bear in my yard. Also having some of the wildlifefighting (screaming growling)in the wee hours in the morning, fighting over the fruit, doesen't make for a restfull sleep
Don;t mean to be a downer, just wanted to let you know

Oh yes, we have all of the above but the area I'm hoping to plant the trees is very near the fenced area for the dogs. We are in the middle of 35 acres of hayfields. Last year, we had 2 bears in our hayfields but they stayed FAR away from the house. They love to eat the clover. As for the deer, I know they also stay far away from the house. I think (but I'm not sure!!) that planting the trees close to the house will discourage most of the wildlife.
